Going solar to solve electricity woes of Karachi
KARACHI: The solar energy projects could pave way to resolve outstanding issue of electricity shortfall. Adopting the option of solar energy, which is considered as clean and green energy would also help in reducing environmental degradation. The use of solar energy for electricity generation is not a new idea, as many advanced countries have already been hugely relying on this clean energy to electrify their cities and benefiting their populations economically and ecologically. In Karachi, Lyari Development Authority has introduced the Solar Energy Light System on 8 kilometer long Hawksbay Road. Agha Maqsood Abbas, Director General Layri Development Authority said the government was paying special attention for the development of Hawksbay Scheme 42, where solar energy system had been installed and Chief Minister Sindh has instructed for release of Rs 1,136 million. It is believed if the government of the Sindh wants to lessen the dependency of unreliable and costly electricity supply of the KESC it should have to give much focus on solar energy like the province of Punjab has initiated solar energy projects in government departments at district level. Many projects of the solar energy are on pipeline in various provinces of Pakistan including Sindh. Recently, Chinas Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTG) announced it planned to invest up to $15 billion for generating 10,000 megawatts (MW) power in the country during the next five years. Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) also had achieved a landmark success by conduction groundbreaking ceremony of first of twenty 50 MW wind power plants to be constructed by CTG Wind Farm Pakistan Limited with investment of $130 million but much efforts were needed to further these and other these kinds of projects. It could be noted that The Zibo City of China is ready to share expertise for setting up solar energy projects in Hyderabad. ppi
