* IG says latest cameras and other security devices will be installed at railway stations

* Sniper guns, 7.62mm G3 telescopic rifles and night vision binoculars being purchased

LAHORE: Pakistan Railways Police Inspector General Ibne Hussain has said that a latest communication and tracking system is being installed to monitor PR tracks and trains across the country for security.

Talking to APP on Sunday, he said the PR Police had been assigned the responsibility to operate a new tracking system, which was earlier being monitored by the IT Department.

He said the new tracking system would be linked to a satellite instead of towers with the cooperation of the National Radio and Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), and that initial talks were underway in this regard. “It will be helpful in rescue operations and monitoring,” he added.

He said the railway police were working on an invisible monitoring system, and that latest equipment including cameras and other security devices would be installed at the railway stations with the help of the NRTC to provide foolproof security to passengers. The IG said that latest weapons including sniper guns, 7.62mm G3 telescopic rifles, night vision binoculars and guns were being purchased from the Pakistan Ordinance Factory, Wah, and an amount of Rs 21 million had been approved for it.

“The weapons will be received within two to three months,” he added. To a question about the recovery of PR land from grabbers, the IG said that about 3,000 acres out of 5,000 acres of encroached commercial, agricultural and non-commercial land had been retrieved from encroachers during the last two years. He said that 13 railway stations, including Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Karachi, Multan, Sukkur and Gujranwala, had been declared high-security zones and a latest invisible security and communication system would soon be installed at the stations. He said that an NRTC team would soon visit Lahore to install equipment as a pilot project.

To another question about security threats on Eidul Azha, he said there were threats in trains going into Balochistan and Sindh, and the police had increased security in all trains and those tracks. He said the number of policemen in trains going into Balochistan had been increased to 10, while four guards would travel in each train entering other areas of the country.

To a question, he said the government had given them a free hand to combat corruption, crime and terrorism, and added that the railways minister or other political leaders did not interfere in police matters. Talking about salaries of railway police force, he said they were lower than those in other police forces, but the department was making efforts to raise them.
