Aircraft maintenance company PT Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) Aero Asia sees huge potential in markets outside Indonesia to grow its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business.

GMF Aero Asia president director Iwan Joeniarto said recently that the company was targeting new markets like India, South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Russia as well as countries in the Middle East.

India presented a great opportunity for GMF to expand because the company already had many clients from the country, Iwan said, adding that countries in the Middle East also offered lucrative markets for the subsidiary of national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia.

“We plan to collaborate with local partners [in the Middle East] to establish maintenance facilities there,” he said.

Iwan said GMF targeted countries like Japan and South Korea as they had enjoyed rapid growth in the aviation industry, but lacked MRO facilities. He added that GMF was also eyeing Vietnam and the Philippines as new markets.

“For instance in Vietnam, the aviation industry is growing very fast. Orders for aircraft are very high, but are not balanced with enough MRO facilities,” he said, adding that Russia also lacked MRO facilities.

GMF Aero Asia offers aircraft maintenance services including base maintenance, engineering, line maintenance, cabin maintenance, engine maintenance and much more.

The company recorded US$470 million in revenue in 2018, up from $439.3 million in 2017. This year, GMF eyes $500 million in revenue. (bbn)

Aircraft maintenance company GMF AeroAsia, a subsidiary of national carrier Garuda Indonesia, signed an agreement on Tuesday with Europe-based aircraft manufacturer Airbus on aircraft component repairs.

This deal will allow GMF to support the operators of Airbus A320 and A330 aircraft in Indonesia and in other Southeast Asia countries in component maintenance.

Under the agreement, Airbus will hand over several tools for component maintenance such as landing gear control interface units, static inverters and slat flap control computers and others.

“It is a list of components basically on landing gear, wings and other components such as braking system components. So, it is a mix of different mechanical components,” said head of Airbus customer services Asia Pacific Bruno Bousquet during the signing ceremony.

“This agreement is in line with the Airbus Flight Hour Services [FHS] commitment to deliver components in a seamless and timely manner, wherever they are needed,” added Bousquet.

GMF AeroAsia business and base operations director Tazar Marta Kurniawan said the cooperation would bring many benefits for Airbus operators in the Asia Pacific region, especially in saving time and costs in terms of aircraft component maintenance.

“[With this agreement] the Airbus components do not need to be sent to Europe if they need repairs,” Tazar added.

Tazar said the agreement was part of the expansion of its long-term relationship with Airbus. The new agreement will also improve GMF AeroAsia’s capabilities in supporting more airline operators within Indonesia and the Asia Pacific region.

“Aside from this component maintenance agreement, we plan to collaborate in other lines such as in Airframe maintenance,” said Tazar. GMF AeroAsia and Airbus also have a long-term maintenance training partnership. In 2013, GMF AeroAsia was appointed as the training center for Airbus aircraft maintenance. This allows GMF to offer Airbus-certified maintenance training courses to customers in Southeast Asia. (bbn)
