General Motors Co. and its joint ventures sold 277,979 vehicles in China last month, up 7.5 percent year-over-year as SUV sales soared, the Detroit automaker said Thursday.

The carmaker said SUV sales in its largest sales market jumped 107 percent from April 2015. The Buick and Baojun brands both saw sales rise 56 percent and Cadillac brand sales increased 13 percent in a month when it launched the new XT5 crossover.

“GM continues to grow in segments that are on top of customers’ purchase lists,” GM China President Matt Tsien said in a statement. “We have more new vehicles on the way in the SUV, MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) and luxury segments to keep delivering to customers what they want and demand.”

GM plans to launch 13 new or significantly refreshed vehicles in China this year, which it believes will help continue to grow sales. The company’s sales performance in April topped its March sales decline of 0.6 percent. GM blamed the drop on model changeover and slowing sales in the mini-commercial vehicle market.

The automaker said Chevrolet sales fell 29 percent in April and Wuling brand sales dropped 14 percent year-over-year as it was impacted by declining sales in the mini-commercial vehicle segment.

Through April, GM and joint ventures sales are up 1.7 percent to a record 1.24 million vehicles.

not surprised at all. I remember reading a few years ago how Chinese like the GM Buick and Cadillac.

very classy cars. In the late 90's my Aunt owned a Buick Park Avenue. I loved that car.

The only time I see a lot of Buicks is when I go to Florida and see all the retirees driving them.

Buick is defiantly a car for old people or old people like them. which is why I say they are old classy cars.

Chinese coming into wealth -middle class and upper middle class- I can see why they would be attracted to GM cars

. . . . .
GM and countless American companies just made a fortune in China thanks to its enormous thriving market.

But you still want to buy Trump's nonsense trade war against China? It is understandable if it is a slogan during the election campaign, but a policy like that during the presidency is like playing with fire.

It is understandable that he is complaining against Japan for only buying few thousands American cars annually, but GM is poised to sell 5 million cars in China by 2020 which is double of your domestic market, so Trump is complaining for nothing.

Sure if everything you sell in the US requires a US partner with 51% ownership...or else we jack the price up 50%..why not.

. . .
That would be a lot higher if a Chinese partner was not required.

We could always add a surcharge to Haier

VW also accepted the joint venture at the time when China was pitifully small, because your local Chinese partner knows how to promote and to sell your cars to the Chinese customers.

VW now considers China more important than their own domestic market, so GM should be happy what the Chinese market has provided.

A Chinese assembly worker only earns 1/4 to 1/3 of its American counterpart for doing the same job, and the price tag of the American cars in China is higher than in its domestic market. No wonder GM is now considering to assemble its cars in China, then ship back to America.

I think there are a bunch of areas that are more important than their domestic market. They probably only sell 20% of their cars in Germany.

Hey I have no idea why they are charging you more. Maybe they only get half the profit so they raise the price to even it out.
