WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is likely to attend an international nuclear summit US President Barack Obama is hosting in Washington next month, diplomatic sources told Dawn.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is also expected to attend the April 12-13 conference.
The sources said that since Prime Minister Gilani now heads the National Command Authority, it is only natural that he attends the meting as well.
Last month, the National Assembly passed a law transferring control of the National Command Authority from the president to the prime minister and effectively making Gilani the final authority on when, if ever, to activate the countrys nuclear power.
In Islamabad, foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Basit told reporters that Pakistan will send a high-level delegation to the meeting but he did not know the composition of the delegation yet.
The summits focus is on securing vulnerable nuclear materials and preventing acts of nuclear terrorism. India and Pakistan crashed the nuclear club in 1998 by conducting tit-for-tat underground tests.
The White House has invited 44 countries to the summit, though the list of delegates has not been finalised.
The purpose of the summit is to discuss steps we can collectively take to secure vulnerable nuclear materials and prevent acts of nuclear terrorism, says White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.
During an April 2009 speech in Prague, President Obama had said that N-terrorism was the most immediate and extreme threat to global security.
