SHANGHAI/TAIPEI, May 31 (Reuters) - German supplier of chemicals and materials used in making semiconductors, KGaA (MRCG.DE), said on Tuesday it had signed a contract to open a semiconductor base in the Chinese city of Zhangjiagang, describing it as its largest single electronics business investment in the country.

The company said in a statement the deal was signed with local authorities.

The new 69-acre base will house production plants for thin film materials and electronic specialty gasses, warehouses, and operation centers.

"China is the largest end market for semiconductors with more than half of the world's total chip output going to China. Given the unprecedented capacity investment and expansion of domestic chip manufacturers, China is currently also the fastest growing semiconductor manufacturing market worldwide," Merck China President Allan Gabor said in a statement. "We believe a golden era for China's semiconductor industry has just begun."

Merck said earlier this year it will invest at least another one billion yuan ($150.18 million) in China by 2025 to support the chip industry. Of that amount, 550 million yuan ($82.60 million) will go towards the new Zhangjiagang base, Merck told Reuters.

Zhangjiagang is a county-level city under the administration of Suzhou city, which is about 100 kilometres east of Shanghai.

@Apollon

I though you brag earlier about German business separation from China? :enjoy:

Good luck with that. German government just yesterday denied Volkswagen investment in China and its more than likely Merck will be banned to invest too 🙂👍

They can sign what they want. The german government starts to see China as enemy and treats it as such.

Meanwhile such news are poison for any european company. Doing Business in china kills their Image and profits.

VW for example is now under fire in all media here for supporting genocide on uighurs

New law in Germany steps into effect in 2023 and basicly makes business in Uighur territory impossible. The effect of the law is simple, german managers of VW will be hold responsible for any wrong doing in China even from subcontractors. So if a worker there claims to be forced worker, the manager in Germany will be brought to court.

The fact that germany denies VW any support in its business in China now is a clear warning to VW managers to retreat from there

China is the world biggest car producer, we build so many cars, we don't need more in this field, but semi conductors, China still dosen't have enough, so it's a better choice for China agree to cooperate.

Are you German? you talk like you are Germany chancellor and even German chancellors can not force German businesses against their will.

Germany’s dangerous dependency on China

It is now extremely difficult for Olaf Scholz to pursue an independent foreign policy

according to one recent survey, 94% of German companies want to maintain their presence in China; 71% want to even increase investment.

Scholz has no power he is in a coalition with the Greens who call China a facist terror regime and block any investment.

I fully support that.

And yes, they can force. As i said, the new law allows any chinese worker to claim to be forced laborer and in Germany the manager will go prison. This makes business simply impossible.

Lol, China can go without Germany with ease, but Germany can not go without China's world biggest consumer market, Chinese market alone can make or break many German companies, Germany now still heavily depends on China, when can it be changed? You mouth won't change anything, it's only a mouth.

To be honest, it is funny that they think like that. Because German - China cooperation was started with a basic trade agreement. But because China is a very big market that can shallow everything that German can offer, they have to expand. And that expansion is good for their economy.

Now after those expansion surpass the trade that they can do with other countries, they start to whine that they are heavily depends on China.

Congratulations. I hope China becomes the world's largest economy.

Europeans have big mouth but little courage nowadays due to your leftist propaganda machine. Stop talking and make some real moves then maybe we'll start to take you more seriously.

.
EU is just an US lapdog, no one takes it seriously, they are tightly on US leash and always sitting there to do US biddings, now they cry about countering China is just because US order them to do, if US starts to mend ties with China, EU will rush to become China's best friend forever within hours.

Doesn't matter matey, you eat mcd, you are supporting American genocide, why he double standards? Mcd fed the US army, 500k people dead and documented, Xinjiang issue has no proof but an allegation but i guess the norm is now guilty until proven innocent right? Germany is a capitalistic country, you cannot deny your companies doing legitimate investments. If you read your article, the German government did not and cannot ban investments, they can deny guarantees, if they can't provide it, then VW can ask from other banks, even Chinese banks. Lol
