Germany Orders New Vehicles & Upgrades
Germany has issued contracts to buy new armored vehicles and upgrade existing armored recovery vehicles to help troops in Afghanistan.
The German Federal Office for Defence and Procurement (BWB) signed a contract April 13 with Krauss-Maffei Wegman (KMW) to buy 39 Dingo 2 armored vehicles in its latest version, with a FLW 100/FLW 200 type light remote weapon station. Delivery is expected in November.
The military already operates nearly 1,000 Dingos in various versions.
Düsseldorf-based Rheinmetall announced April 14 it had won a contract by the BWB to modernize four BPz 3 Büffel armored recovery vehicles, which help bring tracked vehicles back to bases for repairs.
The upgrades improve ballistic protection, harden the floor against mines, and add flank armor against roadside bombs. Also, the ergonomics will be improved and the Büffel's C4I systems will be modernized.
Rheinmetall has done comparable work on Büffel/Buffalo armored recovery vehicles belonging to the Canadian armed forces, Rheinmetall spokesman Oliver Hoffmann said.
