Germany is expected to look into procuring IAIs large Heron TP UAV. If approved, it will be the first complete weapons system obtained from Israel
Germany is expected to reexamine the procurement of the Heron TP UAV manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). This comes in the wake of the cancellation of the European Talarion UAV project.
The Heron, named Eitan by the IDF, is the largest UAV manufactured in Israel, with a wingspan similar to that of a Boeing 737 aircraft.
EADS, which invested vast sums into the Talarion UAV until it was forced to cancel it, has not yet begun formal discussions with IAI. However, German sources assessed that this will take place soon, due to the German armys need for a large UAV with capabilities such as the Heron TP.
German forces in Afghanistan are making use of the smaller Heron-1 UAV, and according to the sources, this factor is drawing the talks for the UAV acquisition closer. The smaller UAV was leased by IAI, and was not purchased.
The Heron TPs open architecture recently resulted in an accelerated process that will enable the UAV to conduct flights in Germanys airspace.
UAV flights, especially heavy and large ones such as these, are problematic throughout the world, and require a special license by aviation authorities. The Heron TPs basic design allows the hastening of the licensing process.
IAI and the French company Dassault Aviation have established a joint company which will suit the Heron TP UAV to the needs of the French army, including equipping it with unique and classified French payloads.
