German lawmakers on Wednesday approved the next phase of a project to build a joint European fighter jet with France and Spain, brushing aside domestic skepticism over the plan.

The budget committee in the Bundestag lower house of parliament gave the green light for the project, known as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), to progress to research and development phases 1B and 2 between 2021 and 2027.

According to a government document seen by AFP, the next steps in the project are set to cost Germany a total of almost 4.5 billion euros ($5.3 billion).

France and Germany announced plans to build a common fighter in 2017, with Spain joining later.

The plane is slated to replace French-made Rafale jets and German and Spanish Eurofighter planes by 2040.

In Phase 2, France’s Dassault Aviation and European planemaker Airbus are to build a demonstrator aimed at testing the reliability of the jet’s cutting-edge technology.

Dirk Hoke, head of Airbus Defence and Space, welcomed the committee’s vote.

“We see this as a strong endorsement and trust in the program’s ability to develop further European operational and technological sovereignty, whilst strengthening its aerospace industry,” he said on Twitter.

But critics in Germany had warned against hasty approval for the next phase of the project.

Der Spiegel magazine reported in early June that the army’s procurement office had written to the Defence Ministry to say the contract “must be renegotiated from a technical and economic point of view” and was “not ready for signing”.

The deal “almost exclusively satisfies French positions, to the detriment of German industry”, it said.

Dennis Rohde, a lawmaker for the Social Democrats (SPD), said on Wednesday his party still had “many questions” about the project and had demanded “clear conditions for further progress”.

France, Germany and Spain announced in May that they had reached agreement on the next phase of the project, capping months of negotiations over how to share the work and the intellectual property.

Beyond a next-generation fighter jet, the FCAS programme includes drones and an ultrafast communications network dubbed the “combat cloud” that will use artificial intelligence capabilities.

The total cost of the programme is expected to reach nearly 100 billion euros.

That money will be better used in develop nukes and ICBM/SLBM technology (a real defensive weapon).

All the modern technology that uses a fighter jet can be remotely disabled by US.

Germany, Italy and Japan... we are not allowed nukes. Lost WWII. We have no seat permanent on the Security Council.

These are G7 members who are errand boys/pages to UK/US/Fr/Can.

Spain is even lower, lost the war against England hundreds of years ago and blamed for a false flag that gave the remaining Spanish Empire to the USA.

Spanish are house slaves of US/UK. Do what you are told. If a country false flags your country to destroy you and you support those same lying countries, you are a house slave. Enjoy your status. If you oppose the Washington endless wars and each false flag, you are not a slave. Opposing somebody who stole your house makes you free. Telling somebody who stole your house, you are supportive of that thief, makes you a slave.

Funny I thought France had pulled out of this project last year and said they would concentrate on the next phases of the Rafale for now and maybe start their own program? I must've missed when they decided to rejoin!

France pull out from Tempest project as far as I know, so the news that you read earlier may be related more on Tempest than this program.

Basically it is not efficient to have more than 3 countries for a fighter program, particularly if all countries want to have significant contribution on the program development. F 35 program pretty much only gives BAE system as the other contributor of the plane development (thus give huge experience for the company) beside Lockheed Martin (LM), while the rest of F 35 international participation were just getting outside of the main design office in LM during development phase and only participate as part suppliers.

So it is not surprised to see European countries are now more divided in their fighter program. Previously we have France who leave the Eurofighter project and develop Rafale by their own, but France also understand that it will be better economically if they join force with German and Spain who also have decent aerospace industry.

Made In Europe technology:

Exactly two months after of:

I think it was not a coincidence.

Three days after a Spanish F18 crashed too.

Those days it was a attempt of color revolution in Catalonia, Spain.

Too much technology too easy remotely hacked.

Better spend money in ballistic missiles as Iran does, a smart state.

Summer 2017: Color revolution in Catalonia, fears of military intervention to stop indepedence referendum.

17 Aug 2017: Barcelona terrorist attacks.
12 Oct 2017: Spanish Eurofighter crash after military parade. Boom, bang.
17 Oct 2017: Spanish F18 crash. Boom, bang bang!

I think two crash in 5 days was enough to calm down warmongers in Spanish army, and thanks God nothing happened in Catalonia.

What a waste of money in flying craps with hardware backdoors!

Better spend money in a sovereign ballistic missile programs and develop nuclear weapon as Iran does!

Europeans need to pool resources on a single platform
