German Navy commissioned first F125-class frigate

18 JUNE 2019

The German Navy commissioned its first Baden-Württemberg-class (F125-class) frigate, the F222 Baden-Württemberg frigate, on June 17, according to Christian Thiels, in a ceremony held at the thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) facility.

Navaltoday reported that the F222 Baden-Württemberg frigate was commissioned eight years after TKMS was selected as prime contractor for the delivery of four 7000-tonne frigates that would replace the eight Bremen-class frigates currently in service with the German Navy.

According to TKMS, the second ship in the class, the Nordrhein-Westfalen, will be ready for delivery this year. The final two vessels are planned to be delivered within the next 2 years.

TKMS pointed out that the F125-class (which is 149 meters long) is highly automated, allowing the crew to be halved compared with previous frigate classes. The crew has been reduced to 126, compared with 200 for the oldest F122 frigates, according to the German Navy. Crew size can be increased to up to 190, still according to TKMS.

. . . . .
Wasted money and time if you check the weapon list.
The Harpoons it carry are interim solution and will be replaced with RBS 15 Mk IV joint sea and land attack missile. The air-def could have been been better but then again, RAM Blk II is not joke and this ship have two systems together with CIWS. That means 42 missiles!

There must be some reason. Germans arent idiots...

Apparently, they have been idiots with this class. The German Navy (which is a joke right now) rejected the ship and returned it to the shipyard 2 years ago.

The ship is 7200 tonnes (heaviest frigate out there) and only carries 8 anti-ship missiles and 42 RAMs. In comparison, the Turkish 2400 tonnes corvette, MILGEM, carries 8 anti-ship, 21 RAMs and 6 torpedoes.

Of course the German frigate has extensive radars etc. compared to MILGEM, however, the ship is the most toothless ship ever built.
