Afghan history with opium goes back even further than the British colonial era opium war.
Afghan opium still finds its way to China and the west via Pakistan - nothing has changed in hundreds of years since Sumerian times.

What changed was that Opium production decreases significantly in Afghanistan at the peak of Taliban power in 2001, but increases again soon after the US occupation... see the above graph...
