Generous offer

The Iraqi Ambassador Dr Rushdi’s offer to sell LPG and oil to Pakistan at cheap rates should be welcomed. One of the largest oil producing countries in the world, there is no doubt that Iraq can help us cope with our energy shortage. The Ambassador even stated that while they were ready what needed to be done was a nod of assent by the Pakistani government.

Indeed Iraq has seen our country ravaged by the worst energy crisis and it rushed to help us out, a sign that it genuinely feels for us as a brotherly Muslim nation. Iraq would probably not make such concessions to everyone and so its offer should not be taken for granted. It also means that Baghdad is serous in strengthening the already existing brotherly bond of friendship between the two countries. Even after years of aggression and endless bloodshed by the Americans along with plundering of its natural resources including oil, Iraq is unfazed and is here to enable us to grapple with the power crunch. The Pakistani government must not hesitate in responding to Mr Rushdi’s offer. He made this offer while having a conversation with Editor-in-Chief Nawa-i-waqt Group Majid Nizami who assured him that he would take up the issue. The Ambassador discussed plans of requesting for Police Training for Iraqi police through Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif. Our entire country can benefit greatly through supply of oil and LPG at affordable rates and hence it is expected the government would respond promptly as well as thank the Iraqi friends for their generosity. Sadly, the worrying thing is that the PPP-led dispensation has already shown that it cares the least about the energy sector going to dogs. It has wasted precious time in playing its part in completion of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline so much so that there have been instances when the Iranian Ambassador and other officials had to publicly express concern at our government’s indifference towards the project. On the other hand, we become more than willing to engage in futile projects like TAPI, which have no hope of easing our woes anytime soon.

Federal Minister for Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain who warned that in two years time the energy crisis will assume horrific proportions should accept the Iraqi Ambassador’s offer without further waste of time. The situation has already become unbearable. And on the other hand the economy itself is on the brink of disaster owing to terrorism. Under circumstances of the sort, it would amount to putting our heads in the noose if we turn down such offers. The bottom line is that it is always a Muslim country that will come to the rescue of its brotherly nation and not the treacherous West that has its own disastrous agenda of spilling the blood of Muslims and appropriating their resources.

Energy-starved Pakistan should accept these generous offers from brotherly countries Iraq and Iran.

TAPI should be cancelled, as its too expensive and Afghanistan's future remains uncertain and U.S. can not be trusted.

Might be America's move to stop Iran-Pakistan pipeline.

Iraq had never been friendly towards Pakistan, infact they openly supported india in their wars with Pakistan.

Hmm where have you been? The brutal pro-india dictator of Iraq (Saddam Hussain) is dead. This new government of Iraq is friendly towards Pakistan and has no signs showing its favoring India or is even interested in Indo-Pak rivalry. They are offering cheap oil, so take it.

No country can stop Iran-Pakistan pipeline. Pakistan just asked for increase gas exports from Iran. It would not hurt importing cheap oil from Iraq and gas from Iran. Also Pakistan should tap its own oil and gas reserves to assure Pakistan is energy sufficient for our future generations.

Our population is growing rapidly and we need these natural resources.

Assalam alaikum

Though i have a lot of reservation about this iraqi government and how it is based on sectarian bases but i have to have to agree with Omar bhai

if they wanna have a fresh start we should not discourage them

The Iraqi ambassador is a bit of a brown noser. He has previously called Pakistan a super power! Flattery will get you anywhere!

Anyway we've been offered oil on credit before by a number of middle eastern countries. Saudi Arabia and Iran come to mind. Our govt. never takes up the offer probably because our rulers are too lazy to do such deals.

The Iraqi ambassador's real motive is to attract Pakistani investment. At least that is what he keeps saying. Seems to be pretty desperate for FDI to be asking a poor country like Pakistan to invest in Iraq. Sort of like scraping the bottom of the barrel.

First of all, India don't need any favor etc. from anyone.

And I think you don't have the knowledge of the projects and contracts Indian companies get in Iraq after the brutal murder of Great Saddam Hussain by Bush.

But the field is open it doesn't stop pakistan to build good relations with Iraq. pakistan always commits mistakes that you people becomes judgmental and don't work hard if some one is so called friend of India etc.

I am sure many of you won't know this that:

Recently India have opened a new line of dialogue and engagement with Khalida Zia in Bangladesh though in the past she is known as anti India. And good thing is that she have responded.

That's called diplomacy, my friend.

1. USA can. Just wait and see pipeline with Iran will never happen.

2. USA is pressing for TAPI (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) pipeline and it will be reality.

3. Problem is again pakistan's lack of far sighted approach. India have hard bargain and gets Nuclear deal with USA and entry into nuclear club + the recent uranium ban lifting talks by Australia is a result of US pressure on Australia.

What pakistan have got????????

Nothing, because pakistan don't bargain anything for economy you only want some weapons and USA is happy to give them.

Our population is growing rapidly and we need these natural resources.

That's for sure and its like a time bomb.

The biggest threat to pakistan comes from within, its huge raising population.

Where all of these people get educated in schools/universities, treated in hospitals, get food, water, electricity, housing etc. etc.

You have to work today for ur future.

Please stop living in the past. Population rise is not a problem. This idea that population rise is a bad thing was discredited ages ago. Before Pakistan even came into being! Read about the Malthusian theory if you want to know more. We can easily afford to house, feed, educate etc. any number of people in Pakistan.

Not happening. The Iraqi oil are stolen property, namely, US. We invaded Iraq to 'steal' Iraqi oil, remember?
