Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government plans to provide a better life for stranded Biharis in the country on humanitarian grounds, although the previous generation had opted for Pakistani citizenship after Bangladesh's independence.

"We want to see a human being as a human being. May be they didn't want to live here then, but where will they go now? Their next generations were born in this country. We have to do something for them," she said.

Hasina said this while addressing an inauguration programme of road infrastructure and drainage system construction and development (phase-1) of the newly created 18 wards of Dhaka North City Corporation.

The programme was held at Kanchkura High School field of ward 44 under Dhaka North City Corporation while PM joined it from her official residence Gono Bhaban.

Talking about stranded Biharis, the PM said that not only in Dhaka, Biharis are living in various areas of the country.

"They wanted to go to Pakistan and have Pakistani citizenship after Bangladesh's independence. But Pakistan never accepted them," she recalled.

In this connection, she said that many organisations collected huge amount of money for them, but their fate did not change at all.

"They are now living in Bangladesh with their children and grandchildren. The living conditions are inhumane -- in congested spaces at Geneva Camps," she said.

The prime minister mentioned that Biharis are hardworking and they are skilled in many crafts.

"I want to arrange good accommodation for them and engage them in jobs that utilise their skills," she said.

She said that this cannot be done in Dhaka, and a convenient place is needed where there are industries or scope of jobs for them.

PM also criticised the mentality of people in the country who think that life is meaningless if they do not have land or flat in Dhaka city.

"This kind of thinking must be discarded," she said.

She said that communication system of the country has improved a lot.

"We are developing rail, road and air communications, people can easily go home after work," she said.

Hasina said that with her personal initiative she identified a piece of 10-bigha land in Gulshan area where a playground will be developed.

"Nothing else, only playground," she said firmly.

The PM again requested people of the country to maintain austerity in using electricity and water as the government is providing a huge amount of money as subsidy for these utilities.

"We are giving huge subsidy, this is all taxpayers' money," she said.

She said that the government is providing the subsidy to improve people's living standards.

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam, Chief of Army Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam and Local Government Division Senior Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed also spike at the programme.

Bihari will be Bihari forever. Bring the Biharis back and return the Bangladeshis in India back. Assamese do not tolerate Bangladeshis, there is always report of tension and violence.
Pakistan should do something similar Karachi is Urdu speaking, UP, Bihari people yet they are home to millions of Bengalis both before and after 71

They should do a program to do a population swap, I doubt current indian government would let muslims come back to Bihar

That shall be a pragmatic approach. They need basic rights of roof, food, water, health, and jobs are their rights. They can still apply for Pakistan citizenship.
Having said that They should had been brought back by Zia and Nawaz govt but they were blackmailed by racist sindhi ppp, hateful sindhi racist nationalist. They were few hundred thousand and denied to return to their country of choice, but what happened. Millions of Afghans came to Pakistan, hundreds of thousands of them living in karachi, isd, Lahore. Hundreds of thousands of Bengalis and Burmese live in Karachi.
So racist sindhi nationalist did not achieve required result of their black mail.
Once there is an fair census, someone from urban area most probably an urdu speaking will form sindh govt. That will be the time sindh shall start its march towards progress, fairness, and merit.
Sindh will become the best in the world once racist ppp and sindh nationalists are defeated and put to their place. Whole sindh will progress including my beautiful city of Sukkar.

I am for a population swap of illegals living in Pak especially Karachi in return for Biharis
don't know how many Biharis there are in Bangladesh but around 2.5 million Bengalis in Karachi, a population swap is a good thing
I doubt anyone would complain, we had a Bihari colony in my city, hard working, humble, cultured and want to progress in society by education, only bad habit I noticed was that they didn't believe in cleanliness (not on a personal level just that they would litter trash everywhere, streets were filthier than other parts of the city even more so than areas with subpar garbage collections- because locals after a while in our areas A- believe in general cleanliness so don't litter everywhere B-its getting out of hand get together monthly and clean it themselves or hound officials but they don't really believe in cleaning their colonies - colony was like another overpopulated Indian city in middle of a cleanish city )
we had a bihari member on PDF from Peshawar, forgot his name though

Bihari identity is historically forever tied to Hindustani identity. They are not non-entity Muhajir.

Pakistan should've taken back those who supporter Pakistan in 71, at least they would be better than Afghans.
Racist PPP and their frontmen sindhi nationalist threatened and cried that they are becoming red indians in sindh. Zia who has hanged Bhutoo saheb, wanted to appeae them and did not dare to bring them back.
Nawaz initially showed some fake moves and then stopped, he just could not become a national leader, limited to appease Punjab and building his constituency in India and world establishment.

Yaar Yehi tu Pakistan ka almia hai... Bihari's are very intelligent people, and extremely educated class of society, we should've bring them not because of that but they stood firm with Pakistan when Mukti Terrorists were killing PA soldiers and Biharis as well.

Dump all back to India where they belong, living in Bangladesh for 70+ years, can't learn Bangla, don't want citizenship, don't want to assimilate...

What are we to do with them ?

They think they will get a better deal in Pakistan.. but will they really ? Pakistan with its 220 million people has no time for refugees, they already have had their fill with afghans.

Truth is Biharis will continue to live like they do right now in BD, they put themselves in this position, also to blame is the Pak gov, who seem oblivious to the issue

Every pak rants rave about these stranded paks in Bangladesh...

Also why doesn't our government pressure pak for bengali rights in pak? These bengalis had no part in the war and moved to Pakistan in 50's and 60's. Today they have no access to health care or medicine or education. They live in miserable conditions and face rampant discrimination in Pakistan

before 74 have citizenship rights so are naturally assimilated into the wider society, I know couple of em myself in my personal life and everythings normal for em
but After 74 ones do not have citizenship rights because they are illegals migrants and numbers run into the millions according to estimates - they face these issues because they cannot get citizenship and perks associated with it
