Industrial And Economic Zones To Be Set Up Under CPEC: CM Gilgit-Baltistan
Islamabad: Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan Hafiz Hafeez-ur-Rehman said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is meant to unite the nation with China as well as the federal government are investing in the multi-billion dollar project.
He said that some CPEC routes are being built by the Chinese government while others are under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) who are releasing the funds.
Hafeez-ur-Rehman said that, “No private sector or industry was thought to be established in Gilgit-Baltistan in next 50 years but now under the CPEC, industrial and economic zones are being set up which will create ample employment opportunities for people.”
He added that earlier only Rs 2 billion was allocated for PSDP projects in Gilgit-Baltistan but now the amount has been increased to over Rs 72 billion.
The Chief Minister further said that Gilgit-Baltistan is the only province which has established patrolling police for security and they have been provided with 25 vehicles by China.

Gilgit Baltistan to get 3G/4G at the start of 2017..
Gilgit Baltistan residents will be able to utilize 3G and 4G services at the start of 2017, according to a senior official of Special Communication Organization (SCO) as reported by Tribune.
The SCO Sector Commander Colonel Imran Butthy further added that approval of government is awaited in this regard and once received, the pending work will be completed soon.
Gilgit-Baltistan is a tricky and difficult area. Admitting to the extreme conditions, Imran mentioned that unfavorable climate was the biggest challenge in ensuring the setup of all requirements and quality services. An optical fiber cable network has been laid in this area which will drastically improve the services in the region.
Just earlier this year, a groundbreaking Pakistan-China Optical Fiber Project worth $44 million was launched in Gilgit. The project aims at providing highly improved information technology services and uninterrupted connectivity in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. This project which comes under the umbrella of Pakistan-China Economic Corridor will improve the state of information technology services in the northern region of Pakistan.
Both of the above-mentioned initiatives are invaluable for economic empowerment of people living in northern regions of the country.

FWO to construct 46bn rupees Gilgit-Skardu Road
Gilgit: The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has been selected through a bidding process for construction of the Gilgit-Skardu Road. The project will be completed at a cost of 46bn rupees.
Speaker GBLA Fida Muhammad Nashad confirmed the report while talking to Pamir Times this evening.
The people of the four districts – Skardu, Ghanche, Shigar and Kharmang- in Baltistan Division had been demanding repair, upgrading and widening of the Jaglote-Skardu road, which is in a dilapidated condition due to natural disasters and wear and tear.
The road is an economic lifeline for the people of Baltistan, apart from being very important for defense and tourism.

Prime Minister Imran Khan chairs a meeting on GB development on Tuesday.
ISLAMABAD: The prime minister on Tuesday approved what is believed to be a historic multi-billion development package for Gilgit Baltistan while pledging that development of the region was among the priorities of his government.
The uplift package was approved in a meeting on development of GB held here and presided over by the prime minister, a press release issued by the PM House’s Media Wing said.
The meeting was attended by federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar, Finance Minister Mohammad Hammad Azhar, Minister for Communications Murad Saeed, Minister for Information Technology Amin-ul-Haq, GB Chief Minister Khalid Khursheed, the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission and other senior officials.
A source close to the PM said that the government did not reveal details of the package as it would be unveiled by the prime minister during his visit to GB in the coming days. The source said the package envisaged infrastructure, road, electricity projects, protection of environment and promotion of tourism.
Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister stressed the need for exploiting huge potential of tourism existing in Gilgit Baltistan. He directed the GB chief minister to give special attention to promotion of tourism and protection of environment.
Under the package, projects in various sectors will not only herald a new chapter of development and progress in Gilgit Baltistan but will also help address the problems of the region and create numerous employment opportunities.

Prime Minister(PM) Imran Khan on Friday said that the provision of 3G and 4G internet services and connectivity in Gilgit Baltistan are significant for not only exploring the talent of resident youth but it can also bring in more tourism to the area.
It will also help youth in getting online education and utilizing their capabilities through information technology besides benefitting from the potential of tourism, he added.
The prime minister was presiding over a meeting held here for bringing about further improvement in connectivity in Gilgit Baltistan.
Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Ali Ameen Gandapur, Minister for Information Technology Amin-ul-Haq, Chief Minister Gilgit Baltistan Muhammad Khalid Khursheed and senior officers were in attendance.
The meeting deliberated on various projects and other related matters for bringing about further improvement in communication links and internet facilities in Northern Areas.
Imran Khan said that the present government was committed to the development of Gilgit Baltistan and has already approved a historic development package for GB, which will herald a new era of progress in the area.
He said that as compared to past the present government was giving special attention to improve connectivity in Gilgit Baltistan and the government’s commitment was also evident from 250% increase in the allocation of funds for communication links in the area.
PM Imran directed the Ministry of Information Technology, Special Communications Organization (SCO) and Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to continue executing improvised ideas to ensure better connectivity in Gilgit region.

First PIA flight from Lahore lands at Skardu Airport

GILGIT: The Pakistan International Airline’s first-ever direct flight from Lahore landed at the Skardu Airport here on Wednesday.
The PK-8453 flight took off from the Allama Iqbal International Airport on Wednesday morning with 153 passengers onboard and landed at the Skardu Airport after one hour and 15 minutes.
The PIA officials received and presented bouquets of flowers to the passengers at the airport.
Later, a cake cutting ceremony was also held to celebrate the occasion.
Gilgit-Baltistan tourism minister Raja Nasir Ali Khan said the first PIA flight coming directly from Lahore also received a water cannon welcome upon landing at the Skardu Airport.
He said there would be two weekly flights on the Lahore-Skardu route, which would go a long way in boosting tourism in the region.
He thanked federal aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan and Pakistan International Airlines for the landmark achievement.
“I promise to take the tourism sector of Gilgit-Baltistan to new heights during my tenure as tourism minister,” he promised.
The tourism minister said flights between Lahore and Skardu would open a new travel corridor for domestic and international tourists.
He said he was looking forward to the flight’s sustainable operation as this would not only promote tourism but also add up to the revenue of the national flag carrier.
PIA CEO Arshad Malik said that the new flight operations would promote tourism in the country.

Service Area Passu is going to be the first ever customised service area on KKH, in addition to the mini service areas made by FWO two years back, to serve the people plying on KKH.
Facilities planned at this service area include fast food franchise, restaurant,
truckers hotel, tuck shops, kiosks, ATM, Washrooms (ladies & gents), fuel station and mosque.
We hope that once made operational in the next few months, this facility will InshAllah go a long way in serving the commuters of KKH travelling between Khunjerab and Gilgit

Pakistan set to elevate Gilgit Baltistan to provincial status.
Pakistan is set to elevate Gilgit Baltistan to provincial status and with this single move it will be able to meet at least seven decades old demand of people of Gilgit-Baltistan to merge with main land constitutionally, secure vital geo-strategic route of China Pakistan Economic Corridor and protect tourism, economic water and energy interests with construction of Bunji and Diamer-Bhasha dams.
However, few quarters have raised objections to the move on varying narratives which need to be addressed. All stakeholders including key political parties have agreed to the proposal of grant of provisional provincial status to the Gilgit Baltistan. Decision will meet long term aspirations of people and will help address local concerns and issues of representation.
People of Gilgit-Baltistan fought for liberation of Gilgit-Baltistan and have demanded for provisional status of a province, the new arrangement will have a provision to cater for plebiscite as per United Nations Security Council resolution for final settlement of the issue.

Mobile Tower installed at Concordia Base Camp in Shigar starts providing cellular and internet services. Gilgit-Baltistan government has provided support to Special Communication Organisation for the installation of this SCOM Tower to ensure communication facility at K2 Base Camp and Concordia Glacier. This step will help in promoting mountaineering and adventure tourism. This will also help in emergency situation and weather monitoring.
