Winter doesn't have to be a dull dreary time. It can also be one filled with fun activities, you don't get to do in any other season. Here, we bring you a sample of such activities from around the world, beginning with Harbin in China.
Plenty of icy fun at Harbin Ice & Snow Festival
28 teams from 12 countries including China, Japan, Russia, Italy and the UK are working on their snow creations on the Sun Island of Harbin. They're taking part in a snow sculpture competition over the course of four days starting Saturday.
Each team has been given a huge snow cube, 3 by 3 by 4 feet. College students from the UK plan to sculpt the image of an Earth on a hand, emitting smoke.

Over a million participate in ice fishing event in S. Korea
More than 150,000 people braved sub-zero temperatures to take part in the start of the ice-fishing festival in South Korea on Saturday.
The Sancheoneo Festival is held every year in Hwacheon, 120 kilometres north of the capital Seoul in the northern province of Gangwon.

The festival gets its name from a mountain trout that lives in the surrounding lakes and creeks.
The festival has also attracted foreigners and this year, about 5,000 foreign visitors came on opening day, according to organisers.
Alcohol in ice glasses in Russia
Frozen fish and ice cold vodka are on the menu at an underground bar in Russia's Yakutsk nestled below permafrost.
"Permafrost Kingdom", a tourist centre that opened in 2008, offers visitors all the possible ways to connect with the frost. It features a collection of frozen fossils and a museum of ice sculptures with a king-size ice bed and intricately carved animals that visitors are allowed to pet for good luck.
The ice bar serves slivers of frozen fish and alcohol in shot glasses made of ice.
