FSB says Skype and Gmail pose threat to Russian security

09.04.2011, 04.00

MOSCOW, April 9 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian Federal Security Service believes that foreign Internet services like Skype, Gmail and Hotmail create a threat to national security and suggests closing them.

“Uncontrollable use of such services can create a major threat to Russia’s security,” the Federal Security Service representative Alexander Andreyechkin explained.

However, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, told a government commission meeting on Friday that the FSB representative had expressed the position of his agency rather than his personal point of view.

“FSB representatives don’t express personal points of view. Naturally, that was the position of the agency,” Peskov said.

Peskov added that the FSB representative had voiced his opinion at a meeting of the governmental commission where only the positions of ministries and agencies could be voiced.

For his part, Igor Shchyogolev, the head of the Russian Ministry of Communications, told Itar-Tass that Russia was not planning to close Skype, Gmail, Hotmail and other foreign Internet services. The problem is how to regulate the application of such technologies, Shchyogolev said.

FSB not planning measures to limit Skype, Gmail use

09.04.2011, 15.33

MOSCOW, April 9 (Itar-Tass) -- The Federal Security Service (FSB) does not propose and is not planning any measures to limit the use of the Internet Skype and Gmail services in Russia, a FSB Public Relations Centre official stated on Saturday.

"On the contrary, development of advanced technologies is a natural process that must be promoted," he noted.

Interesting story, but what they got? This was a warning for all these internet companies not to exceed from their limit and should work under regulations of contract between companies & related state departments.

Soon after Google.Inc informed Russian authorities that they are ready to cooperate with Law enforcement authorities and will provide all necessary information required by security agencies.

Its fact that these companies on one side facilitate people but in other side play effective role in anti-state propaganda which could be a threat for national security.

In Pakistan banning of Geo & aag should be appreciated as media should be under strict control of government, freedom of journalism doesn't means reporting against state and state policies or national interests.

I think Pakistan also should put eye over these internet services providers or mailing companies to enhance its public & social security measure.

Governments should fear their people, not the people fear their Government. Freedom of expression and the press helps keeps the Government honest. It shines the light on injustice and corruption. Which is why totalitarian Governments fear it so much.

Google is spy agency tool its confirmed their systems track information for FBI

Talk about beside the point. The Russian government official was PROTECTING the rights and privacy of Russian citizens by limiting the power of American companies like Skype and Google, which are ultimately accountable to the American government, and a possible vehicle for American espionage on Russian citizens. I wouldn't want to see any man or woman rendered by the CIA and tortured.
