French presidential frontrunner Emmanuel Macron drew a storm of criticism on Wednesday after calling France's colonisation of Algeria a "crime against humanity".

In a TV interview in Algiers this week, the centrist said French actions in Algeria, which achieved independence in 1962 after eight years of war, were "genuinely barbaric, and constitute a part of our past that we have to confront by apologising".

His visit also included a stop at the Martyrs' Memorial in Algiers, saying he wanted to promote a "reconciliation of memories" between the two countries.

His rivals on the right for the French presidency -- due to be decided in a first round election in April and a run-off between the two top candidates in May -- pounced on the comments.

Les Republicans candidate Francois Fillon on Wednesday denounced what he called "this hatred of our history, this perpetual repentance that is unworthy of a candidate for the presidency of the republic".

Wallerand de Saint-Just, an official in Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front party, accused Macron of "shooting France in the back", while Gerald Darmanin, an ally of ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy, tweeted "Shame on Emmanuel Macron for insulting France while abroad".

It was not the first time Macron, who currently leads the polls for the two rounds of voting in April and May, has touched on the livewire issue.

"Yes, there was torture in Algeria, but there was also the emergence of a state, or wealth, of a middle class," he told the magazine Le Point in October.

"This is the reality of colonialism. There are elements of civilisation and elements of barbarism."

And Fillon has been tripped up by his own comments on French colonialism.

In August, he drew claims of trying to sanitise history, claiming that "France is not guilty of having wanted to share its culture with the peoples of Africa".

Macron remains the frontrunner in the presidential race, with 39 percent of those surveyed in the latest survey by pollsters Ipsos giving him a favourable opinion.

In the poll released by the magazine Le Point on Wednesday, Macron was followed by Socialist candidate Benoit Hamon, with 38 percent, while Fillon tumbled 18 percentage points to 25 percent, just behind Le Pen, on 26 percent.

French politicians and presidential candidates have often visited former colonies to boost their foreign policy credentials. On Wednesday, it emerged that far-right candidate Marine Le Pen would visit Lebanon next week, in a nod to the "Christians of the Orient".

The strong dominate the weak when it is profitable for them to do so.Colonialism is just a particular form of domination .Its just the natural order, sadly. No point whining about it,and no reason french people who werent even born when this happened should feel guilty.I say this in the context of colonialism in India as well.If you are weak and have resources ,you will be taken advantage of.Its simple as that.

Traitor...he s not worthy to lead France
He is a traitor because he spoke against a genocide of Algerian Arabs by colonial France?

Then i guess whining about Holocaust is useless too

Well he is a cuck. A weakling. A president must always stand with his own people. No matter what.
nope... when smthing is wrong you say it, no matter which side or position you are on. that's called being a Human . Have fun...
ANd those who can't mke peace with their past are doomed to fall... let's not make you remember Rome or your facist era with your beloved Mussolini...

ps: same with any one around the world..no exception.

No he must stand for the truth and that's what people want a honest leader not someone who's going to blame their problems on the world

I believe that any leader must always and under any circumstance have only his own people in mind. Must serve his people. No matter what.

And? Should i feel sorry or angry? Bc if you put his pic as bc he destroyed carthage, then you failed somwhere in history lesson... go read about him again... and tell me who he found in Carthage when he went there... :)

He found Victory there and total triumph over an enemy. And you know it had to be done. He felt sad that he had to totally destroy Carthage but there was no other way.

Its exactly what i mean. A leader must always think about his people.

Punic empire was our arch enemy. There was no co existance possible.

We won the 1st war and showed mercy and humanity towards Carthago.

How did it thank us? It attacked us just few years later. Our Empire suffered alot from this war, more than ever before.

The mistake was not repeated and as Carthago attacked us again it was this time completly destroyed and never posed a danger again. Which was bad for the carthage people but good for ours.

So tell me, was it a good decission to show mercy in 1st punic war or a bad one for Rome?

Scipion was used by Rome to do the dirty work, since after that he was put aside and forced to leave.... As for those wars, you have to understand who started all that... here a hint...wasn't Carthage.... Rome wanted more than it could eat & choosed to PROTECT a shitty tyrant... . AS for peace treaty, no healthy future will come, when the loosing part had to pay more than they can produce... (same shit as the versaille treaty with germany... and you know what happen after that...). So the conditions wasn't " a thanks or mercy from Rome" it was " a seed for revenge".

ps: In the End I don't really care about Rome or Carthage... it's was just to put "real" facts into your story. Since if an idealogy similar to those two appeared in our time... they will be crushed...

In the End truth should prevail even if it's against your own blood... saying and acknowledging truth will not make you weak... but respected throu history...

What is wrong is wrong, colonialism was bad and we must learn from our past mistakes.
I support the French presidential candidate for his statements condeming past occupation of Algeria by France.

Why should I feel sorry and apologize for something I have nothing to do with and that happened under previous generations and governments ?

He didn't ask you to apologize... but speak about France as a whole. Then why France ask all muslims to condamn ISIS attack or any extremist attack, since they are not the one who did it???
See should be in both side...

You understand me wrong. If against my own blood means damage to my own blood then its never a good thing.

I have no problem to acknowledge bad aspects as long this doesnt damage our well being. You understand what i mean?

Why are holocaust remembrence events still held? Why are apologies demanded on that issue?

It seems to me, we should not stir up the past. Today, he admitted that his fathers and grandfathers committed crimes against civilization. Tomorrow, he will say that the modern French have to pay for these crimes. The day after tomorrow, he will say that the French need to make room and let all natives of former colonies to live in France.
And then France will be gone.
