Four Asian countries to share there fishing zones
with Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government yesterday said four Asian countries had agreed to share their respective economic zones for fishing activities with Sri Lanka.

Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne said Malaysia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and North Korea had made the pledge at the recently concluded Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Ministerial Meeting on Aquaculture for the Asia Pacific Region.

He told a news conference that many important decisions were made at the conference held on July 28 and 29 in Colombo with the participation of 14 fisheries ministers from 17 countries.

“Vietnam which is a leading Asian country in fishing exports extended its support to increase local production by training our personnel in technical skills while Maldives agreed to supply stocks of fingerlings,” the Minister said.

He also said that Vietnam had promised to help Sri Lanka increase three-fold the target of achieving 90,000 metric tonnes by 2013 with the technical assistance provided for inland fishing development.

The meeting was held with the vision of making political commitment about future development of aquatic culture in the region, coordinating regional activities, improvement of regional cooperation in aquaculture and development of aquaculture for food security and raising the nutritional level of the people in the region.

At the conference six key areas were discussed by the ministers. Improving collaboration and friendship between member countries, raising production capacities through technical and policy improvement, intellectual and physical resource development were some of the key areas.
