Foreign investors eye moving production bases to Thailand
Many foreign investors are looking to move their production base to Thailand, according to Kriangkrai Thianukul, vice president of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Bangkok (VNA) – Many foreign investors are looking to move their production base to Thailand, according to Kriangkrai Thianukul, vice president of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

The main reason for their interest in Thailand is the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused manufacturing facilities in China to shut down and affected the supply chain of the industrial sector, he said.

Many companies are planning to move out of China to reduce future risk and are eyeing countries in Southeast Asia, he added.

He further noted that Thailand is among the top choices as the country has several seaports to facilitate logistics and the geographical location is at the centre of the region.

Thailand also has basic infrastructure for high-tech industries as well as cheap labour, he said. The fact that Thailand has handled the pandemic well also proves its ability in dealing with a crisis and helps strengthen investors’ confidence, he explained.

As Asian supply chains reshuffle in the wake of the pandemic, the Thai government is focusing its efforts to attract foreign investors in the medical devices sector, a promising industry in light of the health crisis.

Thailand’s Board of Investment (BoI) aims to set up joint ventures or convince foreign firms to move their manufacturing base for medical devices to the country.

Sonklin Ploymee, executive director of industrial linkage development at BoI, said the group is focusing on developing the country's subcontracting sector to serve new targeted industries in the future.

Initially, the BoI will focus on the aerospace, medical devices, electric vehicle, smart electronics and the railway system sectors, she said.

The division has successfully conducted several programmes to assist foreign assemblers and manufacturers with sourcing high-quality parts and components from Thai small and medium-sized enterprises.

The BoI plans to hold Subcon Thailand, ASEAN's largest international industrial subcontracting event, between September 23 – 26 in Bangkok to facilitate business matching and create a targeted 12 billion THB (nearly 400 million USD) in value from 8,000 business matches.

Seem like Thailand is better in keeping investors than Indonesia

@Indos any idea why Nissan closed in Indonesia instead of in Thai ,bro?

--------

As Japan’s Nissan factory in Indonesia is facing closure, the company is concentrating on its plant in Thailand as the single production base in ASEAN, its statement reads.

Nissan sales in Indonesia is not that great. They are even tumbled against Wuling.

Nissan factory in here is only an assembling factory and it only has one factory so it must have been set up to serve our market, it doesnt seem to have any plan to make Indonesia as a base of production like Toyota does. So as the sales plunges, they dont have any option rather than closing the factory.

Electronics companies like LG and Panasonics said they will relocate their Air Conditioning and Refrigerator from Thailand and Malaysia into Indonesia in the middle of last year and the new factories, based on the plan, will start producing this year in Indonesia. So saying Thailand is more interesting as production base of MNC is not true.

what is status of china relationship with thailand

Yes...but just like airpod sale in VN is not high, but Luxshare is still in VN now and manufacturing mainly for export worldwide. So why Indonesia can not keep Nissan and try to export its cars ??

I dont think Thailand ppl buy all Nissan cars she can manufacture. Nissan cars manufacturing in Thailand export to VN,too.

Why bother to keep them? Why not invest more in the already established companies like Toyota, Honda, Wuling and so on and keep them to invest more in Indonesia.

They only sold of 2500 or something in 2019 in Indonesia, the total sales are comparable to the premium cars from the likes of Mercedez and BMW. This not healthy for them.

Okay....but investors think Thailand is better than Indonesia. Seem like u dont try hard to welcome and keep the investors.

Of course, its just my own opinion. If u dont wanna hear, then we can end the discussion here

1. How far behind is Indonesia?
Of 33 Chinese companies that announced plans to set up or expand abroad from June to August, not one was planning to move to Indonesia, according to a presentation given to Widodo, known as Jokowi, by the World Bank in September. Twenty-three were set to move to Vietnam with the rest heading to Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, India, Mexico and Serbia. “Businesses are moving out of China but are not coming to Indonesia because Indonesia’s neighbors are more welcoming,”

Had they realized their intention? Hard to say without concrete data.

Indonesia still received 6,8 billion us dollar FDI in first quarter 2020, slump 9 percentage compared to last year quarter but with the other fare much worse i dont have any comment.

But overall realized investment is still growing at double digits pace, with domestic investment being the largest contributor

Meanwhile January May 2020 Vietnam FDI data is fare much worse compared to Indonesia

of course VN FDI fall due to Covid, everyone suffering. Thats why we can not let any big investors leave, specially during covid.

Many companies, factories are leaving CN, Hongkong now, VN is hoping to receive more investors HK. Thailand also trying to receive more investment. I dont know if any big MNC leaving CN and building new factories (mainly for export) in Indonesia yet.?

Why you make "the Nissan out of indonesia " like indonesia is not "welcome" or sucks for investor ?

The fact they're open in the first place should be an indication that indonesia is "welcome" to investor, either their product fail in the market or their marketing strategy sucks is a different problem.
