For the planets sake, turn off lights today
Expect a total blackout from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday as Delhiites gear up for the Earth Hour. The annual initiative, organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), is aimed at combating global warming and preserving the environment.
As the Earth Hour will be observed at night, students will not able to do their bit in the campuses. They, however, said they would try to do it at their homes. But that is not stopping those who stay in various college hostels.
We have put up various posters in our college urging students to pledge to observe the Earth Hour on Saturday. Apart from switching off lights in the main college campus, those of us who stay in hostels will also switch off the lights for that hour, said Archit Kumar, first-year BCom (Honours) student of Shri Ram College of Commerce.
Kumar and his friends, for the past one week, have been visiting Khan Market to request the shop owners their to pledge for Earth Hour.
At Miranda House, students will take the pledge in their campus. "We have organised a dinner party for the outgoing students. So we all plan to take the pledge together," said principal Pratibha Jolly. The teachers' quarters and hostels will also switch off power for one hour.
Traders in the city would also join in the initiative. "We have sent out a circular to all the shop owners on Friday requesting them to close down from 8.30pm to 9.30pm on Saturday. Last year, around 70% traders followed it, we are expecting it to be a bigger success as there is more awareness this year," said Atul Bhargava, president of New Delhi Traders Association, Connaught Place.
Hotels in the city, too, have also decided to observe the Earth Hour.
The ITDC hotels in Delhi such as The Ashok, Samrat and Hotel Janpath will use candles in the front office areas and their restaurants.
The WWF has organised an event at the India Gate lawns on Saturday evening, which will be attended by chief minister Sheila Dikshit and actress Vidya Balan, and rock band Euphoria will perform at the event.
MLAs pledge to observe Earth Hour
New Delhi: MLAs in the city are doing their bit to be a part of the global event 'Earth Hour' that aims at conserving energy to counter the effects of global warming.
On Friday, after the Question Hour, Speaker Yoganand Shastri read out the pledge to observe Earth Hour between 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday. All the MLAs vowed to switch off their electrical appliances for an hour
However, a number opposition BJP MLAs were not present, as they were marshalled out of the Assembly for causing uproar on the Shunglu Committee report. Earth Hour is an annual international event by the World Wide Fund for Nature that urges households and businesses across the world to turn off their non-essential electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness on the need to take action on climate change. Neither Sri Lankans will listen to this appeal, they will watch the SL-England quarterfinal. 
But not the fan for sure, its too hot here. There is no load-shading in my home for last 1 year!!! Thats something good.
