Tk 613cr project may get Ecnec approval tomorrow
The government is going to construct a new flyover from ECB Chattar to Mirpur’s Kalshi intersection in the capital to ease the nagging traffic congestion in the area.
The roads in the area will also be widened to ease traffic movement from Mirpur, Pallabi, Dhaka cantonment to Uttara, Tongi, Mohakhali, Rampura areas, official sources said.
A Tk 613-crore project has been taken to build the flyover, which is expected to be placed at tomorrow’s Ecnec meeting for the final approval, sources at the Planning Commission said.
“The project is aimed at improving communications from Dhaka’s western part, including Mirpur area to Tongi, Airport, Gulshan, Banani and other areas,” said a high official at the commission.
Besides, the scheme is likely to get the Ecnec approval as it will help ease traffic gridlock to be created after handing over of flats under construction near Mipur DOHS area, he added.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Special Works Organisation (SWO-West) of Bangladesh Army will complete construction of the 844.12-metre flyover and roads widening work by June 2019.
Earlier, a new road was constructed from Kalshi intersection through Zia Colony road and a flyover was built over the cantonment area to shorten distance from Mirpur to northern part of Dhaka city including Uttara, Airport and Tongi areas, local government, rural development and cooperatives ministry sources said.
After construction of the new road and the flyover, traffic movement to the area saw a big jump.
Now, 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles ply the route every day. Besides, a number of residential and commercial buildings, hospitals and clinics have been set up on both sides of the road, official sources said.
A large number of students of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), National Defence College (NDC), Staff College, Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) and Mirpur Cantonment Public School’s in Mirpur area use the route.
Moreover, construction of some 5,000 to 6,000 flats of National Housing Authority is nearly complete.
After construction of these flats, traffic movement in the area is expected to rise further.
For lack of east-west connecting roads in the capital, residents of Uttara, Mohakhali and Rampura use this route for traveling to Mirpur area.
In this context, the initiative of constructing a new flyover and road widening has been undertaken, taking into account present and future traffic pressure on the route, officials said.
Under the scheme, 11.16 acres of land will be acquired, 3,88,244 cubic metres of soil will be cut and filled and 3,700-metre foundation and pavement will be built.
Also, 609 square metres PC girder bridges will be expanded alongside constructing 500 metre retaining wall, 7,400 metres footpath and 3,700 metre median.
