Flying Officer Zia D Hassan was commissioned in Oct 1961 as Navigator of B-57 Bomber in PAF, He put in only 4 years service in flying in his 26 years of age when Indo-Pak War broke out on 6 Sep 65.He flew valiantly in the War and at the end of War he was decorated with 3rd highest gallantry award Sitara-e Jurrat(SJ) for his valor. He was one of the three Bengali SJ flyers( excluding Sqn Ldr MM Alam being a non Bengali East Pakistani who later opted for Pakistan). Flg Offr Zia was the youngest SJ in the War. Unfortunately he breathed his last too early, with 9+ years of service and at the age of 32 .He died in a tragic B 57 air crash on routine flight on the fateful night of 19 Mar 71 over Karachi,He was buried at Base Masroor in Karachi with full military honour as a War Hero, At his demise he left behind his young widow and a eight years old daughter. He got married only one and a half year back. Flg Offr Zia D Hassan,SJ is my eldest brother.Interestingly two gallantry award decorated brothers in a family fought in two wars where they fought the wars with/against the same opponents in different political and military scenario.
