Question about flares.


When an attack helicopter uses flares for how long do the flares throw off or distort the heat signature of the attack helicopter? For example, an Ingla locks on to the heat signature of an Ah-64, as the rocket fired from the Igla approaches the Ah-64 uses flares, rocket loses it's heat designation. So for how long will the benefits of the flare effect last?

Also how effective are flares? 90% success rating?

A lot less than that, from what I've gathered. Modern IR missiles have measures against flares, they can now, to a good extent, differentiate between flares and engine exhaust. But I doubt we will find the exact figures. Its more of a 'must do something' measure, like beaming or flying with the sun in the background.

Modern MANPADs also come with image guidance...their seeker is very hard to fool. Most of the times,the helo pilot has less than 5 seconds to detect,evade and deploy flares before the MANPAD hits the target.
