Kolkata: Ariful Sheikh, a five-year-old boy from West Bengal, has spent nearly a year at Kushtia Jail in Bangladesh. He was detained along with his grandparents by Bangladesh security forces while they were crossing the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Hachimuddin Sheikh, his wife Mafroza Khatun and grandson Ariful were held on April 15 last year, while they were entering Bangladesh through the Piyarpur border in Doulatpur district. They were headed to a relative's place in Bangladesh for a social visit. But they did not have the required permission and papers. So they were fined 500 takas. Since they didn't have the money to pay the fine, they were ordered to serve two-month imprisonment. But months beyond the expiry of their sentences, they still haven't returned to India.

After human rights activists and the government of India condemned their wrongful detention and demanded their release, Bangladesh's Ministry of Home Affairs issued a release and repatriation order on April 15. But despite the order, there is still no news of the minor boy and his grandparents.

Our Correspondent, Kushtia

A five-year-old boy has been languishing in Kushtia jail for over a year with his grandparents for intruding into Bangladesh without valid travel documents, although their jail term ended 10 months ago.

The boy, Ariful Haq Seikh, his grandfather Hasim Uddin Seikh, 55, and grandmother Maforza Khatun, 50, are from Dhakuri under Bahrampur Police Station of Murshidabad district in West Bengal.

They entered into Bangladesh through Chilmary border point in Kushtia on April 15 last year to visit their relatives in Daulatpur, according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

That day, members of Chilmary BGB arrested the three and sent them to Kushtia jail.

A month later, on May 15, 2011, Kushtia district and sessions judge's court awarded them two months' jail.

Five days later, Kushtia Jailor Omar Faruq informed the Inspector General of Police (Prisons) of the matter. The IGP-prisons forwarded information to the Ministry of Home, from where it was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The foreign ministry contacted the Indian authorities to verify whether the boy and his grandparents were their nationals. India responded in positive.

The confirming of proceedings took a year.

On April 15 this year, the home ministry directed the Kushtia jail authorities to take necessary steps on the issue.

“We wrote to BGB 35-rifles battalion in Chuadanga about the instructions on April 18,” said the Kushtia jailer.

The next day BGB contacted the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at Nadia in West Bengal and BSF agreed to sit in a meeting on April 29.

“We are hopeful that BSF will take the boy and his grandparents back during the meeting,” said Sultan Ahmed, commanding officer of BGB 35-rifles battalion.

These people neither their relative had 500 Tk fine instead had to spend nearly a year in the jail. Very inhumane. Where was our Charity organization or Human rights organization? I am sure there will be thousands of people in Kustia who would be willing to pay that meager amount on their behalf. I hope they find their way back to their land of Milk and Honey soon

How come people from land of milk and honey does not have even 500 taka while traveling to a poor nation like Bangladesh from where 20 million mythical migrants has went to India?? It speaks the volume of their condition.

But they should have thanked to BGB for not killing them and even agreed to release them with 500 taka fine only.
