THATTA: The Indian Navy arrested 174 fishermen and took away 30 fishing vessels and their catch worth millions of rupees from the Pakistan territorial waters in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday early hours.

Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum Chairman Mohammad Ali Shah told DawnNews that the fishermen, who belonged to coastal villages of Thatta, had been fishing in the ‘Harami Doro creek’ when they were taken away at gunpoint.

He said incident took place when Indian Border Security Forces resorted to firing on fishermen and escorted away 174 fishermen who belonged to Chuhar Jamali and Jati tehsils of the district.

Shah said four fishermen Ramoon Themore, Sawan themore, Ameen themore and Nadeem escaped the scene and returned back in Vessel ‘Alroshan’.

These fishermen have confirmed the arrest of their relatives and claimed that Indian Border Security Forces violated Pakistan’s territorial waters and set on fire two of their vessels.

India awaits Pak response on humanitarian issues

India on Saturday said it had asked Pakistan to convene a meeting of the judicial committee of the two countries to discuss humanitarian issues pertaining to prisoners and fishermen but was still awaiting a response.

“India had requested Pakistan in January this year, and again during the talks between Foreign Secretaries last month, to convey dates for the next meeting of India-Pakistan Judicial Committee, which is to be held in Pakistan,” said a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

It said that India had made the proposal so that these humanitarian issues were addressed expeditiously.

“Pakistan’s response is still awaited,” the statement said.

The Committee is tasked with investigating the situation of civilians imprisoned in the jails of the other nation and to obtain and facilitate their release, especially that of fishermen imprisoned for straying across territorial waters.

After a meeting of the Committee in India, Pakistan had released 100 Indian fishermen in December last year.

“There are more than 550 Indian fishermen and 400 Indian fishing boats in Pakistan’s custody, besides 220 Indian prisoners,” the statement said.

The remarks came in the wake of reports on unresolved humanitarian issues between the two countries in a section of Pakistan media.

Pakistani and Indian fishermen are pawns in governments' disputes

Pakistani and Indian fishermen are pawns in governments' disputes
From impoverished villages, the men fish in the Indus River delta or at sea but face arrest if they stumble into foreign waters. Terrorism fears have intensified the two-way cat-and-mouse game.
March 09, 2010|By Alex Rodriguez

Reporting from Jati, Pakistan — His hands wrapped tightly around the frayed rope he uses to steer his skiff, Lutf Ali is visibly on edge as he scans the horizon. He keeps looking to the left, from where the speedboats always pounce.

"The Indian boats are big and noisy, so when we hear them, we try to get away," the 50-year-old Pakistani fisherman says of the neighboring country's coast guard. "If we're lucky, we're not caught."

In the cat-and-mouse game played out every day in the Arabian Sea and in the channels carved into the mud flats of the Indus River delta, Ali is the mouse.

Hundreds of Pakistani and Indian fishermen have been arrested and imprisoned in recent years, high-seas apprehensions that human rights activists say have nothing to do with border enforcement and everything to do with the 6-decade-old hatred between Pakistan and India.

When fishermen from either country are hauled in for questioning, they're interrogated by intelligence agents convinced that the men are spies. The fishermen are often held for years without a trial.

Officials with the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, a human rights nongovernmental organization, or NGO, that focuses on the plight of Indus River delta fishermen, say Indian prisons now hold 175 Pakistani fishermen. The organization's counterpart in India, the National Fishworkers Forum, says 550 Indian fishermen are jailed in Pakistani lockups.

Fishermen and activists with the Indian and Pakistani NGOs say India's border enforcement in the Arabian Sea and nearby channels has stepped up sharply since the terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November 2008, which killed 166 people.

Indian coast guard patrols focus keenly on the Indus River delta, fishermen and activists say, because the Mumbai attackers began their journey to India from the delta's waterways in a small boat, armed with AK-47s, grenades and thousands of rounds of ammunition.

The arrests add another layer of misery for families just scraping by in thatched-hut villages, where schools, electricity and paved roads don't exist.

Since Mohammed Saleh, a 37-year-old Jati fisherman, was arrested more than a year ago and jailed in India, his wife, Zeenat, and two of his older daughters have had to work picking tomatoes and peppers for less than a dollar a day. A 12-year-old son, Sajjad, scours mounds of trash for paper and plastic recyclables.

Indian Navy arresting 174 fisherman from Pakistani territorial waters is a lie. Or else a sham on Pakistani Navy.

However, I would like to say that if they are fisherman arrested in Indian waters, GoI should release them immediately. Poor people should not be brought into the politics of warring nations .

he is too supporting you yaar
Its all politics
POOR PEOPLE

Lol, he could have posted it on a different thread, or probably tone down to one article, which makes it an indirect attack right?

WTH now Indians get Inside our Territory and capture our Citizens.

A Strong message is needed to be delivered to India that we are not those simple Bengali Folks with whom you can do these type of cheap things.

This is a shamefull act by indian army. They always doing such crimes like this also in the past. Don't forget about the 13 years old Pakistani student which was killed in the custody of indian police.

yes it's very brave of indians to arrest poor fishermen. Very honourable of them.

We always hand them back, and indian fishermen are treated better in Pakistani prisons than they are on indian street.

hindoostany returns Pakistani prisoner in body bag, many of them facing torture and abuse......

Our leaders never even address this issue, we should not be averse to confronting these indian and making certain issues and standpoints crystal clear. They need to be taught a lesson.

We should arm the fisherman with weapons so they can put up resistance against Hindu Navy.

First the news is Indian captured Pakistani fishermen from Pakistani waters.
