HYDERABAD: The Bhavaninagar police on Thursday registered a case against Zee News Limited for hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslim community by reportedly telecasting the Charlie Hebdo cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad.
In his complaint, Mohammed Irfan, a student of Islamic studies from Jamia Nizmia and a resident of Nasheman Nagar, said that the news channel and anchor Sudheer Chowdhary were well aware that the cartoon would offend religious feelings and termed this as a deliberate act to create law and order problems, likely to trigger a controversy.
"The video clip has also been uploaded on Zee News website and on Youtube. This means that they (Zee News Limited) want to continuously play with our feelings," Irfan told TOI. The channel had telecast the images on January 7 and again on January 13, he added.
A case has been registered under sections 295 - A (deliberate act to outrage religious feelings), 153 - A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 153 - B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration).
The complainant, through his legal counsel, Ghulam Rabbani also sent a notice to the news channel informing its management that all illustrations of Prophet Muhammad are against Islamic beliefs. He threatened to take legal action if the cartoons were not removed from the website immediately.
Later in the evening on Friday, amidst tight security, members of Majlis Bachao Tehreek staged a dharna against both Charlie Hebdo and Zee News Limited near the Dabeerpura flyover. Carrying banners that read "Down Down Charlie Hebdo, Down Down Zee Television", they later burnt an effigy of the French weekly. Speaking to mediapersons, the party leaders demanded that the ministry of information and broadcasting issue appropriate directions to newspapers and news channels restraining them from carrying the Charlie Hebdo cartoons.
