“Buzz around Indian Air force personnel is that FGFA’s technical specification might be downgraded ” Said Journalist while speaking to idrw.org who didn’t want to be named. Facing continuing deadlock over R&D draft with Russia over the development of stealth fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) which will be based on Sukhoi’s T-50 Stealth aircraft.

India is planning to take Sukhoi-30MKI route in development of FGFA which will be developed as per IAF requirements over the years and technology required by IAF will be sourced from existing suppliers which thus will reduce R&D draft contract which stands at 11$ Billion.

The Indian air force already has reduced its requirements of FGFA from over 200 to 147 aircrafts and India is also ready not to pursue 50:50 work share agreement on the development of FGFA. While Russia still is insisting that India stick to original agreed terms and go with 11$ Billion R&D contract which will allow them to develop many technologies required by the Indian air force on FGFA.

Indian MOD and Indian airforce now feel that the new arrangement will allow faster and compressed timeline for deliveries of FGFA aircrafts and also reduce R&D cost to India. While customization of the aircraft will be an ongoing process which can spread over a decade, a similar process which was used on Su-30MKI aircrafts which got added capabilities and were upgraded from MK-1 to MK-3 over the years after its induction.

Final Bill of FGFA to India might be close to 25$ Billion and IAF in past also has criticized project saying many of technologies developed for T-50/Pak-Fa is not mature enough and still has doubts over the capabilities of the jets . Russian airforce is all set to induct first Pak-Fa aircrafts from next year onwards and due to economic reasons Russian MOD too has reduced orders for its first Stealth aircraft, which has created enough doubts in minds of Indian military planners on aircrafts capabilities .

We need some pragmatic approach in our defense sectors. Many of our projects delayed because of poor project management and dominance of Public sectors and their unwillingness to share the work and R & D. If any pragmatic approach is taken it is very good. Rather than asking for all technologies right from the beginning, it is always better to simultaneously develop and integrate it.

the Ruskies will get it done. I am quite impressed with the Pak-FA. the size, power, and range is something the F-35 lacks.

even if the stealth and avionics are only 80% as good as the F-35 that stills impressive.

These are all killing machines and need a lot of money. Then again, there is no way out of this, mistrust is one of the basic human characteristics.
The logic is same as that of A-Bomb or H-Bomb, if you don't do it, your adversary will.

it's either invest and have faith in Russia...or wait til the F-35 goes into full rate production and hopefully buy a 100+ for $80 mil a piece, but as I've been told India goal is the build in India and ToT which I doubt that offer would be on the table with the F-35.

I don't understand point of this downgrade.

IAF wants a Fifth gen ASAP: Why not but a couple of PAK-FA squadrons off the shelf and let FGFA mature properly?

With India designing AMCA, a downgraded Fifth Gen does not makes sense. While no one is in doubt that due to immaturity of Indian Aviation Industry, AMCA would be less capable than FGFA (unless GoI invest serious money into it), this point become moot if capabilities of FGFA are downgraded.

And what this objection about immaturity in technology means? If this has to be considered a valid objection, then why not fly Mig-21's only. Any new technology (Fifth gen is new tech foe everyone except USA) would take time to mature. Why was IAF so insistent on getting Rafale then? It too had many novel technologies.

ToT is a must. Some of my college mates are working in these state-owned defence industries. They tell me the focus nowadays is to be self-dependent and reduce external dependencies as much as possible, bit by bit.
So, it has to be either a ToT or a JV.

Once India committed to PAK-FA program, F-35 route was closed. No country could afford to have two stealth fighters of different origin in its airforce.

India would probably go for F-35C (all sign point to that) for Naval aviation.

I think its better route because it can be developed later on and we can have mini 5 th gen plane immediately. Even though it has not matured its much better than fully matured rafale at exorbitant cost.

I think we should get the airframe and integrate the technologies here in India or cancelling the FGFA and buying PAK FA is a good option.

1) PAK FA/FGFA integrated with Indigenous technologies for air superiority or fighter bomber

2) AMCA medium multi role

3) LCA mark 2 light fighter.

India requires first prototype of FGFA ASAP cause then only we can select other partners for this project.

I am sure IAF has many other options like the F-35 in coming 10 years time. NATO will going to sell it to India, Korea and Japan just to take out the R&D cost.

I am bit sceptical about this approach. Lets wait & watch out for further developments regarding the matter.
