Feku, selfie make it to Gujarati lexicon
Congress’s attempt to halt Narendra Modi’s march to the PMO by naming him ‘Feku’—for hyping his model of development in Gujarat—made the term go viral and has ensured its entry into the Gujarati lexicon.
AHMEDABAD: Congress's attempt to halt Narendra Modi's march to the PMO by naming him 'Feku'—for hyping his model of development in Gujarat—made the term go viral and has ensured its entry into the Gujarati lexicon.
Interestingly, 'feku', which is colloquial Gujarati for a person who bluffs unabashedly, has only recently been included in the e-dictionary maintained as 'Lok Kosh' (people's dictionary) by Gujaratilexicon.com — an initiative to promote Gujarati.
Along with 'feku', popular Gujarati words such as 'dhuppal' (bluff), 'tapori' (scoundrel), 'bakudi' (term of endearment for a girl), 'dorde-vaatu' (telephone) and English words 'selfie', 'tweet', 'profile' and 'kacker' that took the social media by storm are new entries.
Project manager Maitri Shah says 1,000 glocal—something which reflects and is characterized by both local and global considerations—and colloquial words have been added in Gujaratilexicon.com in an attempt to capture contemporary language.
The initiative is on the pattern of Oxford English Dictionary, which includes expressions and foreign language words annually.
It goes a step ahead and invites people to contribute new words and users can decide their popularity. "The contributor has to establish widespread usage of words. A screening committee decides on the inclusion of words. When accepted, words are displayed on the portal with the contributors' names. Of the 4,300-odd words received, only 944 words have been included," said Shah.
"Our attempt is to formalize this inclusive process through Lok Kosh. We have 45 lakh words in all in Bhagwatgomandal - the Gujarati encyclopedia that is uploaded online by Gujaratilexicon.com. We include words not found in Gujarati dictionaries," Shah said.
