Fazle Amin — a hero who saved 13 people during flood

PESHAWAR: Though the recent floods caused death and destruction at a massive scale in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, there were many acts of heroism such as that of Fazle Amin.

Belonging to Jabba Daudzai village near Peshawar, he set an example by putting his own life in danger to save the lives of fellow villagers. Talking to The News, the 40-year-old Fazle Amin said on July 29 he along with his old mother, four-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son left the village to reach the motorway as water had started flooding the area.

“All the people were in panic and the only place we considered safe was the motorway. Everyone was rushing to the motorway, but we were trapped as the fence erected along the motorway was blocking our way and the water level was increasing rapidly,” he recalled.
Fazle Amin said he placed his daughter on the fence post and asked his son to hold the fence, as he had to support his elderly mother who was in great difficulty. “It was a heart wrenching situation when my daughter screamed ‘Baba, Oba mey dubayi’ (Father, I am drowning) and I was not able to save her,” he recalled the scene with tears in his eyes.

“My father and brother were on the motorway and were crying and watching us helplessly. After an hour of struggle with gushing water, the people on the motorway managed to procure ropes and throw it to us. I tied my mother first with the rope, then my daughter and at the end my son,” he said.

Fazle Amin, who works as a driver in a project run by the Fata Health Secretariat, said once his family shifted to a safe place on the motorway it gave him strength and he decided to shift all the people clinging to the fence.

“One by one I tied rope around the villagers struggling near the fence and they were pulled by the people on the motorway. The speed of the water was hampering my efforts as it was difficult to hold a barbed fence with one hand and tie the rope round the body of the stranded villagers with the other,” Fazle Amin said.

“My brother was very angry with me and was shouting at me to hold the rope and come out of the water, but I decided to help in shifting and saving all the people before moving to the motorway,” he explained.

He shifted 13 people, including a woman Rubina, the daughter of Dost Mohammad, the man who was filmed struggling against the gushing water and the video was shown on almost every national and international TV channel.

After remaining in the water almost for five hours, Fazle Amin was injured and exhausted and it was difficult for him to save the remaining two people. One was Dost Mohammad and the other a woman, Gulnaz, who lost her daughter and father in the flood. Other people eventually saved both.

“My hands were bleeding. I was exhausted and unable to move. By that time another person came to the help of the remaining two people. I couldn’t even tie the rope around my waist and had to just hold the rope to come out of the water,” he recalled.

The residents of Jabba Daudzai were grateful to Fazle Amin, saying the courage shown by him was exemplary. Fazle Amin’s home was badly damaged in the floods and developed cracks due to which he had to shift his family to a rented house. He also lost 12 tolas of gold jewellery and Rs40,000 cash due to the flood. “It is difficult for me to make both ends meet. I am a poor driver and cannot afford to pay the rent of the house where we are living,” he said.
