ISLAMABAD:
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi will leave for the US on Sunday (tomorrow) where he will meet the US President-elect Donald Trump’s team.

Fatemi will make a 10-day trip to the US where he will meet senior officials and discuss Pakistan-US relations, sources said.

On November 30, Nawaz Sharif called Trump. During the conversation Trump said he was ready to play any role that Pakistan wanted him, and find solutions to the outstanding problems.

He said, “Pakistan is an amazing country with tremendous opportunities. Pakistanis are one of the most intelligent people.” On being invited to visit Pakistan by the prime minister, the US president-elect said he would love to visit the ‘fantastic country of fantastic people’.

Republican Party Pakistani-American Sajid Tarar said on Saturday that he had made possible telephonic contact between US President-elect Donald Trump and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

In a media talk, Tarar said that after contact with Indian PM Narendra Modi need was felt for a similar conversation with the Pakistani prime minister.

Trump’s conversation drew criticism around the world. Questions were raised over his understanding of the region and Nawaz Sharif’s position in Pakistan who is being tried for Panama Leaks case in the Supreme Court. Later, Trump’s team downplayed the conversation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday they said that the two leaders “had a productive conversation about how the US and Pakistan will have a strong working relationship in the future” and Trump was “looking forward to a lasting and strong personal relationship with Sharif.”

After the ginormous blunder of the phone call to shine his political prestige, a little minion is being sent. Lets see if he is being sent for national interests of personal!

His family is all US national. Yanks kay agay iss ki bolti band hojaey ge. Nawaz just simply wont learn. We need people who are dead serious about securing national interests.

A good move. The Paks will be negotiating from a position of strength since they're de-leveraging at a fast pace. They've substituted even F-16s!!!!

Fatemi is going to visit Trump's team to gauge their positions on Pakistans and inform them of Pakistan's concerns and interests. Nothing else.

Sir, I don't know how much you know about diplomacy but the call issue was how things usually play out. In India's case, no one cares because they are deep inside the US administration from a lobby's standpoint but we've laughed at many a statements where it wasn't correct either. But then there are similar behaviors all across the globe with respect to a call with the "American President" (or the President-Elect). Content from these speeches is used for political purposes. Nothing wrong with positive attitude. It could've been a bit more carefully handled.

But having that said, you couldn't discount that the action itself was very timely. Many in Washington have actually praised this because historically, Pakistan has never cared to get involved at an early stages and in a proactive manner. These are good steps indeed and have started to highlight the fact that Pakistan has started to become important on the global map. Thanks

In my opinion if this trip comes with out any strings attached is than good otherwise its another cheesy kindness trip

Hopefully fruitful journey
IMO, the new administration is in a tight spot. Old grand coalitions are falling apart giving rise to historical bilateral staffs staying within one own turfs. It appear only the Chinese/Turkish/Pak/Russian folks are surging ahead with experiments....
