What's new

F35 FIFTH gen fighter a Sitting Duck against Flankers & Co

personally I THINK the latest 4th generation fighters like

Typhoon
Rafale
SU35/MKI
F15/E/K silent Eagle and new F16/70

ARE STILL THE BEST ALL ROUND FIGHTERS and far cheaper to buy and operate

Very interesting report,

USA has reduced super manorvability speed and weapons load and is relying on stealth and killing from BVR

but kill ratios beyond 40km are reduced from 50% to 10% only

ITS A DANGEROUS GAME

the F-35 is actually quite maneuverable

I personally would rather have a load out of only AIM-9X block III over AIM-120D on the F-35

F-35 sensors+LOAL=easy kills.

what is LOAL?

I have a hunch that sooner or later next gen radars will be able to detect the current stealth A/C and thus rendering them useless and a drag on economy.

With the cloak of stealth gone, 5th gens will stand stark naked to the new radars and thus quite vulnerable to their fast moving older siblings.

However, then nations will start investing in the next gen stealth techs and this vicious circle to go on until it would become totally unfeasible economically to pursue it any further.

References a 2013 youtube video and pierre sprey, a much discredited critic of the F-35. That was just from a brief glance through the first few paragraphs, but its enough to disqualify the piece.

Anyways I got my bingo card ready for this thread just in case

Most Russian fighters have high maneuverability and are the best aircrafts when it comes to dog fights. As long as the F35 is stealthy, it would definitely have an edge when it comes to BVR combat but with the advancement of radars, even the stealthiest of aircrafts can be detected be it the F35 or T50 or J20 and once F35 comes head on for a dog fight with any of the flankers, it can easily be out maneuvered.

Radars can detect stealthy aircraft today. But either cant make them out as targets rather than birds, or only when it is too late or close. This is and always has been a matter of degree. Anyone who believe in stealth making aircraft invisible hasnt grasped the concept. There is no cloak to remove.

Very well said, but not entirely true. Birds don't fly at sub-sonic / supersonic speeds

Yes I know that is basically the RCS...stealthy means very small RCS than a normal A/C at a particular distance but this is for the current gen of radars...if you are one of those who believe that radar tech has reached its limits and no improvement will be made then it is great for you...no stress and happy life...But if you have happen to be in the group that thinks the technology advances with time perhaps then you may need to worry about your 5th A/C getting not only detected and shot at much earlier than they expected and a 4th gen equipped with upgraded radars was able to intercept and lock on 5th gen thanks to its faster speed...
Furthermore, a tennis ball or a bird travelling near the speed of sound must raise some alarms... I hope you got what I mean :azn:
or do I need to go all over again?

My pigeons do :-)

But granted you ave a point here. But you get the idea.

Dont start on me about radar. I am from the country that makes smart-l, its uk cousin for type 45' apar, smart-s mk 1 and mk 2, and now a new generation of aesa radars. Thales netherlands, formerly signaal, formerly hollandse signaal apparaten hsa (which furnishedusn with radars for 40mm aaa prior to ww2 already).

Why is russia working on stealthy pakfa, or china on f-35 and f-22 equivalents if the cloak of stealth was, is, or will be removed?

F22 is a nice plane, but F35 just a fat girl born by usa with a combination of nato countrys.
This fat girl will be f--ked by the other 5th G fighters just like a sitting duck
the most clever part is that usa almost kill other NATO country's Next Generation aircraft self-R&D ability with this fat girl.

When was the last time there was a dogfight gun kill? Most kills currently are long range air to air missiles. And considering the advanced in missile tech, trying to outmaneuver a missile is futile. Don't need to go behind a Flanker to shoot it down.
