Selective Arithmetic to Hide the F-35’s True Costs

Selective Acquisition Arithmetic

The latest Pentagon and Lockheed Martin figure touted in the press is $77.9 million for each F-35 in the Lot 14 batch for fiscal year 2020. But taxpayers pay far more than that for an F-35. This number, like the others trotted out to prove the plane’s affordability, hardly provides the full picture not just of the price per aircraft, but the program as a whole.

The services’ publicly available budget documents provide a more comprehensive picture of these costs. According to the Air Force’s aircraft procurement justification book for fiscal year 2021, the $77.9 million sticker price for the 2020 model F-35A jumps to $110.3 million per aircraft when all aspects of the program are added together. And this figure will rise in the coming years as aircraft purchased now receive significant upgrades.

Air Force Reduces Exhibition Flights on New F-35 Engine Woes
Bloomberg - Are you a robot?
"The engines on A-model F-35s have been running “hot,” or close to the limits of their design, and that heat has caused premature cracks, or delamination, of turbine blade coatings. That’s required the engines to be removed or repaired earlier than anticipated, aggravating an already backlogged depot system. The cracks in the coating aren’t a flight safety issue, but they reduce an engine’s useful life, said a defense official."

18Tons thrust and already close to the limit.... what a pity !

Bon Plan is friend of mine, indeed.

And Bon Plan is now nearly automatically ban on this forum. The world famous muslim freedom of speech I imagine? Nothing like that on Indian or english forums for exemple.

The Real F-35 Problem We Need to Solve
Unless its logistics can be improved, the jet’s contributions to a major fight will be far less than Pentagon wargamers are counting on.

When Pentagon strategists game out potential near-peer conflicts, they tend to plug in sortie-generation rates for the F-35 Lightning II that reflect the program’s original vision, not the far lower numbers that represent the actual state of things.

Is the F-35 Program at a Crossroads?

...
In the case of the F-35, the developmental testing done to date has already revealed major shortcomings, but the most serious flaws emerged once the F-35 was in the hands of real operators in the field during operational testing.
...
The latest annual report from the Pentagon’s Director, Operational Test & Evaluation (DOT&E) details how the failure to deliver a critical simulation facility has made it impossible to complete the initial operational tests required to make the full-rate production decision.
...
And the program is nine years behind the original 2001 schedule. (nine years late in 20 years ! congrats LM).
...
the latest report again found that when engineers fix one software problem they “often introduced stability problems and/or adversely affected other functionality.”
...
Another significant shortcoming of the F-35 program is its vulnerability to hacking.
...
The F-35 is a notoriously maintenance-intensive aircraft.
...
the F-35 fleet as a whole failed to meet the 70% mission capable goal.
...
Even given the years of experience maintenance crews have with the aircraft, DOT&E reports it took them longer to make repairs on the F-35 than it should have—sometimes more than twice as long.
...
It costs approximately $44,000 per hour to fly the F-35.
...
the Autonomic Logistics Information System (ALIS), the Pentagon finally threw in the towel in 2020 and will spend $550 million over the next 5 years to build an entirely new one.
...
As far as that goes, the ODIN managers seem to be repeating the same mistakes the ALIS managers made. ALIS went through four separate versions in 2020 alone, including one urgent fix over the summer meant to correct a problem in an earlier patched version that generated 10 times the normal number of maintenance alarms.
...
There can be little doubt that, after 20 years, the F-35 is a complete boondoggle. DOT&E warns that many of the F-35s that were delivered early on in the cycle are not combat-ready. It remains to be seen if these aircraft, which happen to be the most expensive ones, will ever serve a purpose beyond being demonstration trainers or spare parts repositories.
...
It could signal that the F-35 program may about to face the same fate as several other once-marquee 21st century weapon programs like the Zumwalt-class destroyer, the F-22, and the Littoral Combat Ship. In other words, just like those disastrously failed programs, the F-35 may be dramatically reduced in scope due to a combination of technological failures and skyrocketing costs.

. .
I don’t think these headlines reflect the Air Force’s thinking - it is more about the economy of deploying a 5th generation fighter against ragtag rebels or the sortie generation cost of using a 5th gen aircraft.

The F-35 is great at what it’s designed to do - but the fight for a 1000 F-35’s just is not there. Russia isn’t building the su-57 in numbers and China’s 5th gen fleet can be tackled by F-22’s and F-35s in current numbers - while the remaining 4.5 gen fleet can mop up whats left.
