Storm Clouds Gather Over F-35B Lightning As United Kingdom Prepares Defense Review

Bronk said he thought the 138-aircraft target was an “aspiration unlikely to be funded,”

Reports in the British media last month suggested that the United Kingdom may only buy 70 F-35Bs, rather than the 138 aircraft originally planned.

50% cut !!!!!

.

The Greek decision to opt for the Rafale could signal the end of official interest in the F-35 Lightning II. In December 2019, Prime Minister Mitsotakis revealed that he would be discussing a potential purchase of the Joint Strike Fighter with U.S. President Donald Trump during a visit to the White House the following January.

.
The focus is Tempest, at multiple levels it offers more than what the F35B brings to the UK. This has been on the cards for some time, and for once the UK MOD is making the right decision! We are not likely to have more aircraft carriers than the 2 we have and the procurement pipeline will have enough units to meet those needs.

The problem is I doubt the UK has the money nor the will for the Tempest, esp given the cash crunch the gov is in right now. The US would also undoubtedly refuse to transfer core stealth/5th gen technology to even its closest ally, something like the Tempest just isn't feasible at all. The cut down by 50% just shows the UK is pretty cash strapped at this point ... which makes the Tempest development even less likely.

May be LM should take a leaf out of the French playbook and give away free F-35.
Will the French keep distribution free Rafales or was Greece a one off?

No Rafale offered for free !
The 12 second hand may be sell around half the full price (it's what I've seen in a french newsapaper), ie in th 50€ millions each = 600 millions for all 12.
The 6 brnd new can be selled in the 100€ million each = 600 millions dor these 6.
Total 1.2 billion €.
Add some training, some spares, some test benchs....

The request from Grece was not to spend more than 2 billions €.

And there was not only a funding problem, but also a delivery time one. Brand new aircrafts need 3 years....

I've read quite everything ! from 6 to 12 second hand. But second hand absolutely don't mean donation for 0€.....
The last news in France (but it may change as no contract inked so far) was for 12 x 2nd hand.

Due to thunder risk, the NL F35 can't contribute to the allied sky mission... :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Fortunately for NL, they have some F16.... for now.

With a full F35 fleet, how to be ready for QRA in thunder environnement ?
This issue is apparent in F-35A model courtesy of the onboard OBIGGS which is a common feature in modern aircraft:

"The problem is with the Onboard Inert Gas Generation System (OBIGGS) is a safety subsystem common in modern airplanes. A typical OBIGGS system diverts air from the aircraft engine and separates the nitrogen, injecting it into the jet’s fuel tanks. The more inflammable nitrogen present the less flammable oxygen, helping reduce the possibility of fuel tank explosions. Wartime damage aside, one way a fuel tank explosion might take place is as a result of a lightning strike."

The other two models - F-35B and F-35C - do not share this problem.

This issue is expected to be FIXED nevertheless:

"Because the tube may not work properly in a lightning strike, F-35A unit commanders have been advised to direct their pilots to steer well clear of known or potential lightning storms until the issue is resolved. The problem apparently hasn’t affected the F-35B or C models."

Do people give up on systems just like that? Overreaction as usual.

Just another problem....

You are so ignorant my friend!!

No F-16's don't require OBIGGS because the fuel tanks are not made from composite materials.
Typical of most 4 Gen fighters ... like...F-16, F-18 and Falafel...I mean fafael...nope ra..fail

You are so brain limited my dear....

The french made OBIGGS is thunder free.
It is the F35 OBIGGS that is, all quite the whole F35 project, a fail. A fail and a re fail.

On US specifications !
The one on Rafale, (made by the same company if I remember well) is perfectly functioning.
Another exemple of the lack of technical culture by the US....

Take your medicine my brain limited friend, and go to bed.
