The focus is Tempest, at multiple levels it offers more than what the F35B brings to the UK. This has been on the cards for some time, and for once the UK MOD is making the right decision! We are not likely to have more aircraft carriers than the 2 we have and the procurement pipeline will have enough units to meet those needs.

The problem is I doubt the UK has the money nor the will for the Tempest, esp given the cash crunch the gov is in right now. The US would also undoubtedly refuse to transfer core stealth/5th gen technology to even its closest ally, something like the Tempest just isn't feasible at all. The cut down by 50% just shows the UK is pretty cash strapped at this point ... which makes the Tempest development even less likely.

The 12 second hand may be sell around half the full price (it's what I've seen in a french newsapaper), ie in th 50€ millions each = 600 millions for all 12.
The 6 brnd new can be selled in the 100€ million each = 600 millions dor these 6.
Total 1.2 billion €.
Add some training, some spares, some test benchs....

The request from Grece was not to spend more than 2 billions €.

And there was not only a funding problem, but also a delivery time one. Brand new aircrafts need 3 years....

I've read quite everything ! from 6 to 12 second hand. But second hand absolutely don't mean donation for 0€.....

This issue is apparent in F-35A model courtesy of the onboard OBIGGS which is a common feature in modern aircraft:

"The problem is with the Onboard Inert Gas Generation System (OBIGGS) is a safety subsystem common in modern airplanes. A typical OBIGGS system diverts air from the aircraft engine and separates the nitrogen, injecting it into the jet’s fuel tanks. The more inflammable nitrogen present the less flammable oxygen, helping reduce the possibility of fuel tank explosions. Wartime damage aside, one way a fuel tank explosion might take place is as a result of a lightning strike."

No F-16's don't require OBIGGS because the fuel tanks are not made from composite materials.
