What's new

F-35 Stealth is also a Gunfighter !

While most fighter have less than 10 second of gun ammo, the F-35 seems to have 15 seconds of sustained firing time in the air.... which also makes it ideal for ground staffing as well.

where do the spent cartridges go?

Most modern fighters have what's called a linkless feed. Instead of bullets being linked by chains and ejected from the aircraft, they are pushed from the drum to the gun in guides, and spent cases are returned to the drum. This prevents spent cases and chain links from going into the engines or control
surfaces.
This is an M61 Vulcan, used in pretty much every NATO fighter. You can see the big guide for live rounds and the smaller one for spent cases.
