The government of India is, likely to take a call on which Single-engined combat jet proposals submitted by Lockheed Martin for F-16V and Saab for Gripen E will be selected to be manufactured locally in the country after Aero India 2017 said serving air force official to idrw.org.

Official confirmed that it will be a Political decision and which fighter makes the cut will be taken by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar who is going through all merits of both the proposals.

The government wants to close the deal as soon as possible and in sidelines of Aero India, a winner might be declared or later in March 2017 which was the original deadline Parrikar had sought to go through proposals before coming to a decision.

Government tilt is towards Lockheed Martin’s F-16 proposal, while IAF is tilting towards Saab’s Grippen Proposal.

if we want build a aero industry then gripen...

if we want a product then f16....

agreed. f-16 is passe and best to go with gripen. friend who flies it says it is just best in class. even botswana is going for gripen-e.

point well taken - gripen brings best of performance across the board; plus why do you need political headache with US equipment. Man it is like driving a Corolla and being offered a Chevy; but at least with Corolla it will work all the time... unlike an appliance - simple analogy.

But you know that Gripen also relies heavily on US tech, right?

I don't understand why f-16 is a competitor in MMRCA deal at all?? Gripen E is far better choice, turn rate better than like of Rafale, Typhoon & even f-22. Operational cost is way lower, has Raven AESA radar hoping Saab would go for Tejas Radar Tender too. Production line for gripen E will be more advance than that of f-16's when we lack production technology we need this. For price Gripen E is for $85 mn while f-16 for $70 mn, have F414G engine, have meteor & python-5 like Rafale. And most important Saab looks trustworthy than USA, i hope they would win this $12+ bn deal.

I think Grippen will be best bet as US will never gona share technology ...they even not share the codes of radar ...so Grippen-E seems better option , 8-10 squadrons of Grippen will give enough TOT to make Tejas Mark2 as very very potent fighter

what political benefit will Gripen E bring ?

If F-16 INs are selected then numbers will swell to around 150 and of Gripen NG/E are selected then it will be restricted to ~100.

After Blk62 in MMRCA, they are now considering at "V", which is <BLk60. I think bad reporting.

what political benefit will Gripen E bring ?
Well Saab is a leading company in defence sector, they recently won anti-tank weapon order in India so they would benefit us in long term if we make a pact with Saab. We are buying from Boeing for quite some time but Lockheed doesn't look that trustworthy specially when there is Trump too. It would be better if we won't inc. our relationship with US more buy buying 140 jet as it could complicate our foreign politics.

It will be f-16 because you are obsessed with Pakistan.
Yeah it could be as you can see this is the first time after a long time that we are thinking about Pak directly rather using China as benchmark. We are developing ANGI-1P for Pak, increasing range of BrahMos, now looking to buy NBC protection suit to counter Pak's tactical nukes. So yeah now Pak takes a major role for our defence purchases.

I hope India go for F-16s instead of Gripen NG because latter one required low maintenance staff of only 6, can operate from roads and make shift runways with good STOL capability (allowing better TAT and sortie rate), have swash plate AESA radar (more angle coverage which F-16 don't have) and have nearly everything which F-16 has.
