Haq's Musings: Understanding the Trump Phenomenon in America

Donald Trump, a political novice, has stunned the world with a string of successes in Republican primaries to become the leading candidate for the GOP (Grand Old Party, aka Republican Party) nomination for US President in 2016. The fear of a hostile takeover of the GOP by Trump has sent the party establishment into panic mode. What are the factors behind this development? Who are Donald Trump's supporters? What is motivating their anger and their disdain of the Republican party leadership? Let's try and answer these questions:

1. Changing Demographics and Economy:

When I first arrived in the United States in late 1970s, America had very different demographics. It was about 85% white. Most Americans with just a high school diploma enjoyed middle class living standards. They had good jobs in manufacturing industries like auto and steel. These jobs paid them well enough to buy a decent new home and drive late-model American-made cars.

The US demographics and economy have both changed dramatically in the last four decades. Minorities now account for about 30% of the US population. Low birth rate among whites and increasing immigration have both contributed to this reality. Meanwhile, unrelenting forces of globalization and continuing creative destruction have replaced the bulk of auto and steel manufacturing industries with new, high-tech industries. The high-tech sector in the United States is booming. It's creating a lot of new jobs. But most of these new jobs require at least a college degree and higher level skills, the kind of skills many middle-aged non-college-educated white Americans do not have.

2. Social Impact of Changes:

A combination economic and demographic changes has taken its greatest toll on middle-aged white Americans without college education. They are disillusioned and angry. And they are lashing out at the "establishment" politicians on both ends of the political spectrum, but mainly on the GOP side. Donald Trump has successfully exploited this anger by blaming immigrants, religious minorities and other nations for their problems.

In a paper titled "Rising morbidity and mortality in midlife among white non-Hispanic Americans in the 21st century" published last year, Princeton economists Anne Case and Nobel Laureate Angus Deaton have shown that over the last 15 years, white middle-aged Americans have been dying at unusually high rates. Most of those deaths have been concentrated among people with only a high-school diploma, or less. Polls say that these older, less-educated whites form the core pf support for Donald Trump.

3. Voting Patterns By Race:

Will Trump Become the Next President? It appears unlikely given his support base. Here's why: John McCain and Mitt Romney, the last two Republican candidates since 2008, won the majority of white votes but failed to win the general election. Each of them got 60% of the 70% white votes that add up to 42% of the overall electorate. In addition, each of them got only 6% of Black votes and about 26% of the Asian and Hispanic votes that prevented them from gaining the overall majority needed to win. Trump's campaign rhetoric has managed to anger all minority groups, particularly Mexicans and Muslims. He will get even fewer minority votes than McCain and Romney polled in the last two general elections.

Summary:

The Trump phenomenon appears to be linked to the changing US economy that has left many middle-aged non-college-educated white Americans behind. Like many other demagogues before him, Donald J. Trump is exploiting their deep dis-satisfaction and rising anger by blaming minorities and immigrants for their problems. Even if Trump wins the Republican nomination, the chances of his success in 2016 general elections are remote.

Never heard of this Donald Trump guy. He must be another con-artist American politician. I try not to get caught up in analysis of such games. Its been the same since before my gram. I can recall my great grandmother telling me, "You know we have to choose a lesser evil". In north Korea you essentially get 1 candidate per ballot. In America the land of the free and brave. Each of the two ruling classes picks a candidate for each side to fight and drool over further clustering us. I am interested in local politics. So who is this Donald? He is a big deal?

For a comparison, just substitue Mexicans and Muslims for Jews and Gypsies.

In the early 1930s, the mood in Germany was grim. The worldwide economic depression had hit the country especially hard, and millions of people were out of work. Still fresh in the minds of many was Germany's humiliating defeat fifteen years earlier during World War I, and Germans lacked confidence in their weak government, known as the Weimar Republic. These conditions provided the chance for the rise of a new leader, Adolf Hitler, and his party, the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or Nazi party for short.
Hitler was a powerful and spellbinding speaker who attracted a wide following of Germans desperate for change. He promised the disenchanted a better life and a new and glorious Germany. The Nazis appealed especially to the unemployed, young people, and members of the lower middle class (small store owners, office employees, craftsmen, and farmers).

If it is Hillary vs Chump, Hillary will be President. The US is not a Nazi-style fascist society.

But if it is Sanders vs Chump, then Chump will be President. The US is not friendly, or ready as some would say, for socialism-communism.

Donald Trump before he started his campaign had experimented with Human Behavior (American TV audiences) in variety of shows (Apprentice, and many other TV outlets, to experiment with manipulation of public opinion).

While the TV shows and his content was crap , he managed to entice the public to keep watching such failed shows just on virtue of "shock and awe" factor. While he may have failed on many front but he managed to avoid bankruptcy by public speeches , writing books and building and buying properties world wide even in Moslem countries, he even went as far as to come to Wrestling events and spread his name in wrestle-mania which the ground level white population watches. He would attend these events and gather public support by acting like a puppet attracting that 19-24 age group demographics

While his competitors were conservative , he used every tactic to spread his name , like the Kardashians of political world every week his name stayed in news , due to some "event" or action. Kardashian normally flaunted her butt or upper chest assets , Trump flaunted his hair and make it into news or wore a silly cap

Eventually when he analyzed the figures he said to himself that he can certainly manipulate the public

1. He will use the skills of shock and awe , and give the hungry people that on a weekly and monthly basis. This kept him into news and gain him free publicity.

  • Example of shock and awe -> Making fund of Mexican people's heritage
  • Kicking out Mexican reporters
  • Making fun of Moslem
  • Calling Arab Prince as a joke
  • Going to Israel , then not going or getting any invite
  • Building wall around mexico like they are dirty rats
  • Rallying up the folks who don't understand where the 13 Trillion dollars went
  • Whenever he wanted to impress people he pointed to his TV shows and books and speeches that he was a "SPECIALIST" he never stated who really benefited from his books he just said his wealth was a signal and proof he is successful. Never focusing and explaining how much of his money he inherited vs how much he made himself

2. He touched controversial Immigration issues saying Mexicans are to blame for America's problem when every one knows these people pay taxes and also they work for United states

3. He Used the financial fears of Americans to scare them to vote for him while majority of US funds are wasted on international wars (13-20 Trillion dollars in debt) , he decided to scare Americans unless they vote for him they will loose every thing. He kept saying people that he made 4 Billion dollars - he is a successful man. However majority of his money was inherited, and he himself suffered loses in Business.

4. Donald Trump and Average white guy have nothing in common . There is nothing common between Donald Trump and a white guy who works in construction

Donald has his Condo , construction guy has mortgage payments
Donald has his luxury cars, construction guy is driving a old pickup
Donald gets his hair done by professionals daily , construction guy puts a cap on that is it
Donald spend his vacation on secluded island or on his million dollar ship, construction guy might go to see aquarium once a year or so

However when Donald goes on the camera , and he loves to go on camera , he does . I mean CNN love him , fox loves him and he knows BBC calls him daily , but when he does he makes sure that tells them white folks that he is one of them
