Sure they can take action, but what makes you think the rest of the world wouldn't pull a Iraq on Egypt and obliterate their military; stop their food and money. Just look at Venezuela without a military conflict what that country has turned into. Western intervention can happen to secure the Suez Canal it's happened in the past and it can happen again. Israel & Ethiopia can be used as launch pads, providing close proximity and easily resupply forces.

Turkey could get a chance to spite with Egypt by using its resources in Somalia and in the Horn of Africa as well I heard Turkish-Etihopian ties are pretty cordial and is 2nd largest investor after China

One only has to think why Ethiopia was never colonized by European powers (except in 1933 by Italians for a short period), and U.S. relations stayed strong since 1903, and one of only African countries to fight along U.S. in the Korean War. The relationship became even stronger after 9/11 under the guise of fighting terrorism; U.S. main goals is economic growth and security.

You have to dig deeper after 9/11 how the relationship has evolved that was put on hold between European Powers and Ethiopia for centuries.

Israel knows with Egypt down like Iraq, Syria and Lebanon their's no challenge on its Eastern Front, and only challenge remains is the Western Front from Egypt. Israel has supplied parts and equipment to their military, trained with them since the 50's/60's on top of this prevented coupes from happening against any Israeli friendly leaders. The Jewish population and Israel has a very deep connection and not to forget Ethiopia has been a Jewish refugee since centuries. There's more to this relation that just Egypt being some pathway for trade and commerce.

Ethopian armed forces have proved their mettle in Somalia in recent years - they are battle-hardened and can fight very well.

And now they are showing teeth to Egypt over the issue of dam even though Egypt has superior military might. This has a deeper meaning.
