The naval group was chosen by the Cairo Egyptian Navy to equip four corvettes Gowind armies VL Mica and Exocet missiles MBDA . An estimated € 1 billion contract.

This is a coup for DCNS to export ... to the surprise of many in Paris . According to reliable sources , the naval group has an agreement in principle for the sale of Cairo four corvettes Gowind 2,400 tonnes ( + 2 options trading) armed surface -to-air and sea - VL Mica sea Exocet missiles. A contract valued at € 1 billion off armament. Competition won against German shipyards ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems ( TKMS ) , which proposed Meko A200, and Dutch Damen ( corvette Sigma). Three of the four corvettes Gowind be manufactured in Egypt. DCNS is a new success after it won Gowind Malaysia (6 corvettes ) .

It is the Minister of Defence , Marshal Abdel Fattah al- Sisi , who is a candidate in the presidential election , which decided this acquisition. It is also a strong gesture Cairo vis-à -vis Paris . The Egyptian army was called in late January the chief architect of the removal of Mohamed Morsi Islamist president last July, to answer the "call of the people" by going to the presidential election. The current strong man of Egypt wishes before he left the ministry complete a number of issues . This is also the case for the purchase of the Egyptian army 's new transport aircraft CASA Airbus Group. The Egyptian Air Force ( Air Force Egypt ) already operates five C-295 on the 12 ordered.

Egypt would also exercised an option to acquire two additional submarine U -209 manufactured by the German naval group TKMS . This is an option on two new buildings , which would be exercised by Cairo in the OTC contract signed in the summer of 2011 for an amount of € 920 million . Then a deposit had been paid a few months later in December. The first armed submarine sea Harpoon Block II - sea missiles from Boeing , to be delivered in 2016.

In consideration of the sale in Cairo , Berlin decided last week to launch the construction of the sixth submarine Dophin ( modified to launch nuclear missiles U- 214) to Israel. Three buildings have already been delivered and two more are under construction in the German shipyard in Kiel. Dolphin of which give an operational and technological superiority Israelis face the Egyptians .

Russia and Egypt are close to conclude contracts on arms purchases totaling more than $ 3 billion ( 2.18 billion euros), was announced in mid- February, the Russian business daily Vedomosti . The two sides " initialed or signed contracts for more than $ 3 billion " which focuses on " the purchase of fighter aircraft MiG-29M/M2 of air defense systems of different types of helicopters Mi- 35 " and other Russian arms , had the newspaper said , citing sources in the Russian defense industry . These purchases must be financed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to Vedomosti.

L'Egypte sur le point de s'offrir quatre Gowind de DCNS pour 1 milliard d'euros

Who's paying for this? And is Egypt getting Dolphin submarines? This article confused me, or are they saying Egypt's getting U-209's to counter Israeli dolphin threat?

Who's paying for this?

It's from the Armed Forces' budget.

And is Egypt getting Dolphin submarines?

Nope, an advanced version of the Type-209 of which the Dolphin is a variant.

This article confused me, or are they saying Egypt's getting U-209's to counter Israeli dolphin threat?

That may be just the Google translate messing things up. Or they may have written that.

The budget is classified, anything you see on the internet is an approximation and I don't think any of them are close to what it actually is.

It's under $12 billion for sure though right? And for how long has it been classified? Why do you think it's classified?

I would personally say it is in and around the number you just quoted.

And for how long has it been classified? Why do you think it's classified?

Pretty much forever. It's classified for national security reasons, without a declared budget the enemy can't (as) accurately assess your capabilities.

well eygpt willl be going on weapons buying spree due to saudi financing

Will the T-209 be coming with an AIP?

I realised that both Egypt and Israel are building up their submarine arsenals... Are you guys countering each other or are there any reasons else ?

We have to replace our 4 old improved sino-Romeo Class submarines and the Israelis want to strengthen their nuclear deterrent, either way there has always been an arms race between the two nations even with the presence of the peace treaty.

Coming soon to the Egyptian Navy (Although the Egyptian one will be about 1000 tons heavier than the one featured in the video)

DCNS Cuts Deal With Egypt for 4 Gowind Ships
Jul. 11, 2014 - By PIERRE TRAN

PARIS— French shipbuilder DCNS has sold four Gowind warships to Egypt, with the first 2,500-ton corvette to be built in France and the remaining three in Alexandria through a technology transfer, a company spokesman said Friday.

The contract was signed in June and has now gone into effect, the spokesman said. The spokesman declined to confirm the €1 billion (US $1.4 billion) value for the four units reported on the website La Tribune.

This is a “major program for the Egyptian Navy,” he said.

A further two units are held as options, the spokesman said. The deal includes DCNS’ Setis combat management system and is seen as a boost for Egyptian local industry.
