NARSS: Egypt to launch the first local communications satellite in the Middle East and Africa during 2015 at a cost of 900 million pounds.

Dr Alaa Alnahri Deputy head of NARSS which is a part of the Egyptian Ministry of Scientific Research, announced that Egypt is taking steps towards its first local communications satellite, which will be the first of its type in the Middle East and Africa.
Dr Alaa Alnahri added in his exclusive interview with "The Seventh Day" that the United Arab Emirates is the biggest financial contributor in the satellite, which costs around 900 million pounds. He also pointed out that production of the satellite will begin in the current year of 2015.
Dr Alaa Alnahri pointed out that the National Bank of Egypt will is also participating in the project as a financier, in addition to several other Egyptian companies. He added that the satellite is planned to be built in France or other European nations with strong space programs, because of the specialized technologies required to build such a satellite, he admitted that as of yet no deal has been signed with any European nation to build the satellite but did say that parts of the sat will be built by NARSS in its 'Space City'.
He also explained that the new satellite will solve an issue Egypt has with tracking or "seeing" aircraft after they have left its air space, adding that the satellite will make Egypt a power in this field on the Middle Eastern and African level.
On another subject the Dr revealed that the satellite "EgyptSat-2" is being used to discover terror operations currently, especially cases of border infiltration, explaining that the satellite had an accuracy of one meter. However, it can not detect tunnel activity because it does not have a radar.
The Dr indicated that Egypt is planning on producing a satellite with a radar in cooperation with China named "EgyptSat-3" which will be able to detect tunnel activity.
