Egypt, Russia sign Ka-52K training agreement

Russia and Egypt have reached an agreement under which Egyptian pilots will be trained to fly the Kamov Ka-52K Katran (the naval version of the Ka-52 Alligator) attack helicopter, the Russian newspaper Izvestia reported on 6 September, citing a source in military and diplomatic circles.

The source said the agreement was reached when Egyptian defence minister Sedki Sobhi met his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow and noted that this indicated that Cairo, which has already ordered the standard Ka-52, would also order the naval version for its two Mistral-class amphibious assault ships.

"The ministers agreed on specific measures for the preparation of the Egyptian pilots for flying the ship-based Ka-52K," it quoted the source as saying. The Egyptian side has until the end of the year to send the necessary documents to Moscow, and then Russia will develop a training programme, the source added.

The two French-built Mistrals were originally ordered for the Russian Navy, with the design being modified to accommodate the Ka-52K that was being developed for the ships, but France had to cancel the contract due to the imposition of EU sanctions on Moscow.

Russian presidential aide Vladimir Kozhin told journalists on 6 September that negotiations to supply Egypt with communications and control equipment, as well as helicopters, for its Mistrals are ongoing, but no contracts had been signed as yet.

The TASS news agency reported that the United Instrument Manufacturing Corporation has completed the communications and control systems, which could be delivered to Egypt at short notice.

Meanwhile, the Russian Navy has announced that the Ka-52K will be part of the new air wing for the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov during its forthcoming deployment to the Mediterranean to support operations in Syria.

Because the KA-52K was specifically designed for the Mistral. The flight deck of the Mistral was designed for helicopters. Apaches don't have folding wings so they would simply take up too much space, I'm not sure the Mistral would even be able to accommodate Apaches below deck due to the rotors not being able to fold. Besides that the MA-52K is covered with anti carosive coating that was designed for coping with harsh sea salt. The KA-52K is also designed for maritime operations with the ability to detect ships from 200kms away.

so Egyptian navy will use attack chopper just like USMC uses AH 1Z viper .

Why would they want to? What advantage would a 1960s design offer? Yes I'm aware it's a new variant but a coaxial design offers superior performance. In terms of pilot survivability, discounting Electronic counter measures, the KA-52k has ejection seats.

I am saying that Egyptian navy will use attack chopper just like USMC does. I am not suggesting them to induct AH 1Z . I am giving analogy .

They need Ka-52, because their Apaches are not the same as he American or Usraeli ones, the same as their F-16s without BVR capability nor AESA radars, so they are looking to close that _very important gap_ in capabilities..

then why Egypt buy junk from US ? they should look for other alternatives.

The money that comes from the US as military aid to Egypt can buy only American gear, now Egypt is paying other gear with its own money..

1) The AH-64 serves a specific role in the EAF in support of mechanised and armoured formations.

2) It is not suited to maritime operations and the EN needs a helicopter that is.

3) The Armed Forces is currently diversifying its armament sources.

4) The only real options were Russian or European with the former being the most attractive financially and in terms of capability.

5) The Mistrals will be equipped with Russian communication systems etc. so this will be less of a hassle in terms of net centrism

The Agusta Westland AH-64 does feature folding rotors and has a limited maritime capability. You're spot on with everything else though.

The Apache will remain Egypt's front line attack helicopter and most likely its most advanced even with new types coming into service.

The EAF is planning to add more to its inventory.

Yes, plus 50 Kamovs KA-50 and 16 KA-52 for the Mistrals..
