Le Siroco rentre à Toulon à l’issue de sa dernière mission | Mer et Marine

80 million Euro including training and changing parts is dirt cheap

If the refurbish is extensive enough and there's enough life left in them, why not?
I don't think they're exhausted anyway and that the real reason for retirement is just
phasing out due to the Mistrals taking over.
The 80M price does not include refitting and training however. That's on top of it.

Keep us posted, bro! GN Tay.

Egypt may end up with the mistral built for the Russians.

The made for Russia Mistrals have two problems for Egypt, @Ceylal .

A- Their specs are different by a lot. The mili equip Russian ones are not so bad in
and of themselves but things like hardened front hulls for iced up Arctic waters are.
When Egyptian waterways freeze, the world will have bigger problems than war.

B- And that pales in comparison to need! Why would Egypt need ships to invade
other countries by sea with in any case? Which countries? At most, one could think
Libya but ground and air troops would suffice.

Considering its geopolitical situation, Foudre-class would be more than appropriate.

Good day, Tay.

Egypt is one of the pillar of the US hegemony...The Mistral will be a good addition for the mission they signed up to...Beside France doesn't need them, Egypt navy does.

actually tay there is a lot of rumors coming that egypt is interested in the mistral not the russian ones specifically , about our needs well we don't know what's going on inside the arab generals minds and their plans , a war can happen anytime and they will possibly rely on us on troops whether in their land or others land , so this will give provide some flexibility that you can send troops and equipment not just by air but also through the sea , and tbh i think the foudre will not be on our list we are going now for brand new equipment , i heard also that there is a chinese deal coming soon and there was a visit today

Keep me posted then Kamal especially if you find serious prospective pieces on a
geo-political analysis of the motives to acquire new Mistrals or something similar.
Even within the newly proposed Arab League rapid reaction force, Mistrals seem
oversize considering Egypt's potent location, quite central to possible conflicts.

I'll check it by myself but would be interested in credible sources you may find.
GN brother, Tay.

TASS: Economy - France could 'scuttle' Mistral warships if scraps delivery to Russia — paper

France could 'scuttle' Mistral warships if scraps delivery to Russia

France may opt for deliberately sinking in the open sea two Mistral-class helicopter carriers built for Russia if Paris choses to cancel the contract and refuses to hand over them to Russia, Le Figaro reported on Wednesday.

"Among the possible options of actions considered by the official Paris, a possibility is being studied of destroying the helicopter carriers. They will be either dismantled and utilized or scuttled in the open sea," the French newspaper reported.

Such an option of ending the 1.12 billion-euro French-Russian contract for the construction of two Mistral-class helicopter carriers for the Russian Navy, signed in June 2011, is "shocking," the newspaper said.

A high-ranking French military official told the newspaper that such measures are "unacceptable" with due regard to the employees of Saint-Nazaire, France's largest shipyard, where the huge warships were built.

The newspaper also said the plans of using the Mistral helicopter carriers by the French Navy are "unlikely" as they have been built in accordance with the Russian standards and the efforts to reequip them will cost hundreds of millions of euros.

"In this context, the main option is the possibility of finding new customers for these two Mistrals," the report says. The potential clients are Canada, Egypt and a North European country.

Under the contract, Russia was expected to receive the first of the two warships, the Vladivostok, in the autumn of 2014. However, Paris suspended the ship’s handover to Russia at the very last moment over Moscow’s stance on developments in neighboring Ukraine.

It was planned that the second ship dubbed the Sevastopol would be handed over to Russia in the second half of 2015. But the deal was suspended like in the case with the first Mistral ship.
