The Egyptian and Greek Foreign Ministers at the moment of signing
August 6, 2020

On Thursday, Egypt and Greece signed an agreement to demarcate the maritime borders between the two countries, in a move aimed at coordinating efforts to benefit from the resources of the eastern Mediterranean region.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Minister Sameh Shoukry had received his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias in Cairo, to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral relations and coordination on issues of common concern.

After the meeting, the two ministers signed the agreement, which comes amid tensions in the eastern Mediterranean region, due to the illegal Turkish moves to explore for energy resources.

In a press conference after the signing, Shoukry said that the agreement "allows Egypt and Greece to move forward in maximizing the utilization of the wealth available in each other's exclusive economic zone, especially promising oil and gas reserves."

And "the agreement opens new horizons for more regional cooperation in the energy field in light of the two countries' membership in the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum," according to Shukri, who said that the relationship with Greece is "old and very important for Egypt."

He added: "We signed with Greece the agreement to designate the exclusive economic zone in accordance with the law of international seas. We will go forward with it in investing promising gas reserves in the Mediterranean."

Shoukry explained that "the relationship between Egypt and Greece was a major factor in maintaining security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, and facing irresponsible policies to support terrorism, in addition to deviating from the foundations of international law."

On the other hand, the Greek foreign minister said that "there is complete and continuous communication between the two countries at the highest levels."

And Dendias considered that the agreement signed late last year between Turkey and the Tripoli government to demarcate the maritime borders "is not legal."

He added, "We will face all challenges in the region in cooperation with Egypt."

UN does not recognize or not recognize certain states. That is up to individual member states. For example, Greece recognizes the Tobruk government, not the Tripoli government. For example, KSA recognizes the Aden government, not the Sanaa government. For example, the US recognizes the Bab government, not the Damascus government.

Excellent! Our Greek brothers and sisters have been great friends to Egypt. This is the official start of a partnership that will last forever.

The Law of International Seas says that each country has 12 nautical miles of territorial waters, then 200 nautical miles of economic waters, so if the distance between two countries does not allow it, then a bilateral agreement to define the maritime borders between the two countries is the solution.
There was a disagreement between Egypt and its ally Greece over a marine area that was equal to the area of Alexandria Governorate, which caused the delay of the agreement. And when Egypt was proposing to international companies to explore for gas in Block 10, the Greeks objected.
The Egyptian negotiator did not give up a single inch of Egypt's rights, and insisted on full rights, and even warned Greek allies that the delay would be a possible loophole that "Erdogan" can take advantage of and the damage will be on Greece, not Egypt.
And indeed, Erdogan tried and made an agreement with the outgoing and unelected government in Tripoli - Libya.
Greece then waked up and signed an agreement of the maritime boundary with Italy "No. 1 in the picture", then an agreement of the maritime boundary with the elected authority in Libya - Parliament "No. 2 in the picture" and then with Egypt "No. 3 in the picture."

The total distance between Egypt and Greece is 210 nautical miles. Today's agreement is divided into equal parts of 105 nautical miles EEZ for each country, which shows that Egypt didn't give up a single inch even if it has waited too long.
In this way, the Eastern Mediterranean file was closed in the face of Erdogan, and all the agreements signed between Egypt, Greece, Cyprus, Libya and Italy are internationally recognized..

Sarraj in Tripoli government is not elected. Therefore Greece and Egypt do not consider him legitimate. They only recognized the Tobruk elected parliament headed by Saleh.

He was elected temporarily.. but he is long overdue.. So illegitimate now..
His primary mission as an interim president was to get all Libyans together to elect a government and stop the fighting.. but he obviously failed as we can all see..

Yep, and I was really surprised at the time about Greece's inability to recognize that and seemed not to be able to reconcile the situation, and thought it was only a matter of demarcation and water lines. And this is a testament to how even good friends will have disputes and won't always agree on everything. The only thing that matters is how they deal with these disagreements and find solutions to them. And of course Egypt didn't give up anything. That's nothing but another infamous turkish lie to try and throw more flames at the heat.
