Duterte: Stop being xenophobic towards Chinese nationals

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 3) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday asked Filipinos to stop being “xenophobic” or blaming Chinese nationals on the outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus or 2019 n-CoV.

“This kind of mentioning the Chinese and blaming them, it’s like a xenophobia,” said Duterte in a late night press briefing with the Cabinet officials at Malacanang.

Duterte has recently expanded the coverage of the temporary travel banwhich includes foreign travelers from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

"China has been kind to us, we should show the same favor to them. Stop this xenophobia thing," Duterte added.

Further, the President said that he will not bar all Chinese nationals from entering the country saying that it would be a sign of “disrespect.”

“Kung magtanong kayo if I will bar the Chinese from entering, the answer of course is no. That is an utter disrespect to a human being,” said Duterte.

“If there are Chinese found positive and we don’t want them to travel to further aggravate the situation, we can assure the Chinese government, that we too will help.”

The Bureau of Immigration earlier refused the entry to foreigners, including 300 Chinese nationals, who arrived from Hong Kong and Macau. This was a day after Duterte announced the travel ban.

The immigration agency said that it was already coordinating with the Chinese embassy to bring home the stranded foreigners.

The 2019- n-CoV originated from Wuhan City in the Hubei province in China, where it has killed over 360 people. The virus has already spread in 27 countries, with the first death outside China reported in the Philippines.

It's stupid to assume that all Chinese nationals or even most have the virus. The chances that a Chinese national has the virus is less than 1% of 1%.

However, it's not surprising that these Chinese nationals have failed to win good will from neighboring countries like the Philippines long before this crisis. They don't speak English, they have shit communication skills, social skills and are very clannish. Everywhere these PRC nationals go, they just alienate and irritate the locals. It's almost a guarantee.
