Will Singapore ever escape from the misconception that it is a part of China?

Seems like that day will not come so soon, especially after seeing this police report.

Singaporean Muhammad Khalid reported to the police on 9 May in Amsterdam that his phone was stolen.

A photo of the police report was posted by his brother on Reddit on Thursday, and it has since attracted more than 8,000 views and close to 100 comments.

In the report, Khalid’s birthplace is stated as “Singapore in China” and his nationality as “Chinese”.

Keep in mind that he is a Malay and that he had already informed the officer of his ethnicity.

The post sparked a discussion from other Redditors on the misconception about Singapore’s location.

A user known as sense_make shared that as a Caucasian who spends a lot of time in Singapore, he constantly gets asked, “So how was China?"

User condor_gyros noted that few Malays are seen outside Southeast Asia and that may be a reason for the misconception.

“Most people outside of the (Southeast Asian) region have probably never seen a Malay person before,’ the user said.

Meanwhile, user cancerstick99 highlighted that while the police officer was unable to locate Singapore accurately, some Singaporeans might not be able to “tell which part of Europe someone is from” either.

Basically, not everyone’s good in Geography.

Singapore better watch out. Few decades down the line, the Chinese might just claim Singapore and use this document as evidence to back their claim :haha:

an interesting incident, what more interesting are comments that followed the article.

'the Chinese' lol Singapore IS a Chinese state. The PRC on the other hand have better things to do in that time frame, such as liberating Northeast 'India'. :p:

You can't really blame them. Singapore is a Chinese dominated city-state. Most of the people are Chinese. It's not wrong to call them Chinese as that is what they are ethnic, cultural and blood wise.

This misconception arises because the majority of the Singaporean population are "ethnic Chinese".

But definitely NOT Chinese citizens.

That's the thing. They are still Chinese no matter what. Just like Chinese that live in North America or Europe and have been there for many generations. They are still Chinese. No one says, oh look, that's an American guy.

They are "ethnic Chinese", but I do not consider Gordon Chang or Gary Locke to be fellow Chinese. They are 100% American, by loyalty and citizenship.

Interesting observation. In America, if a White American sees a Chinese American and refers to him as being "Chinese", the Chinese American doesn't really care, doesn't mind it.

In Japan, however, we also have close to 1 million Zainichi Chugokojin, many of whom are already naturalized as Nihonjin. Interesting enough, I have served with some Japanese in JMSDF who are ethnically Han (his parents naturalized as Japanese) but whenever we jokingly called him "Chinese" (you know we just teased) he was very angry, and adamantly rebuked us, " Iie!! Watashi wa NIHONJIN desu..!!!"

I think in Japan, people of Chinese decent will quickly take up the Japanese identity. Tho they do preserve their cultural values (tho Japanese and Chinese cultural values are already almost identical with very minor unique differences).

And how was your Han friend brought to Japan? Does he have a different narrative to China-Japan relations? Or does he like many right wingers, think that Nanking massacre never happened?
