Dump outdated equipment: Army wives

Blaming it in on Modi again. The guy just came to office a few months ago. Where was your concern during the entire UPA rule of 10 plus yrs? Keep on defending the guilty....it reveals a bit about yourself.

He is just desperate to somehow tarnish the Modi govt.

Expect this kind of nonsense in every thread that speaks of Modi got. doing something good for the Armed forces

Or a certain "equipment" of theirs.

(Yea, I'm still thinking of long, cylindrical aircrafts.:partay:)

So what is long black and full of seamen ? :D

Topic fits better in this thread...

HAL is capable of delivering this project in time, if pressed enough. Now with direct PM's involvement in this manufacturing, they'll be under constant pressure to perform and deliver the LUH in time.

Seems you got confused by the reports too. The PM is not pushing HAL to deliver their indigenous LUH, but is diverting the foreign LUH licence production, which was meant to be done by HAL, to a privat company! So he is not pushing for an Indigenous solution, but remains with procureing a foreign product, just build by another Indian company. This change of manufacturer is the only reason why modernisation of IA and IAF fleets are delayed now! So IA will remain to use aging Cheetah and Chetak helicopters at Siachin for quiet some time, putting the lifes of our soldiers into greater risks.

If we are not careful, we will never come out of the whole import-urgent need-equip cycle. Somewhere someone has to take initiative to come out of this vicious cycle. IMO the PM is just doing that

True, but the PM is doing exactly the opposite, by not supporting indigenous products, while inviting more and more foreign vendors to produce their defence products in India. His aim is not indigenous developments, but manufacturing in India.

If he would have a focus on indigenous developments, he could had scrapped this deal and provided HAL with the full order of around 400 indigenously developed LUHs
If he would have a focus on indigenous developments, he could had scrapped the foreign SSK procurement and could gave indigenous shipyards the order to develop indigenously developed SSKs
If he would have a focus on indigenous developments, he could had scrapped IN's order for Do 228s and insisted on Saras
If he would have a focus on indigenous developments, he could had scrapped the Spike ATGM deal and insited on further development and orders for NAG
If he would have a focus on indigenous developments, he could had scrapped M-MRCA and forced IAF to more LCA orders

But all this never happened and thankfully won't happen, but it shows that the general perception about his aim on indigenous development is completelly flawed, because of the mixed signals and statements he and the NDA give. But it was even in their manifesto, which stated that they aim on increased ToT in defence "manufacturing" not development, that they want to encourage the domesting industry to produce products for the domestic or export use. So they always had the economy as the key aim, not the indigenous developments to support our forces and the security of the country. What we see today is just the consequence of this political agenda, that will be paid by delayed modernisation in our forces!

Soldier's lives were being risked long before Modi. In fact, since Independence,

But they are doing it for the coutry, to protect it and the people in it! They are not suppose to risk their lives because of a business agenda of a political party and that's the difference!
Ask any soldier if he is ready to risk his life for more business for privat industries, I doubt you get the answer you would like.

That's the problem if you are not open minded, because it's not about which party is better, but about decisions the ruling government takes and what effects they have, in this case for our forces. The simple fact that you can't deny the delays caused by this decision alone shows the problem, but closing your eyes won't help our forces right?
Why do you think these wives send a open letter to the PM? To make aware of a problem!
That's the same what I do, by showing that we wouldn't have the problem if the PM would have just selected a winner now, instead of scrapping and re-tendering. Just as the former Army Chief should had selected a winner, since it was obvious that there were no corruption issues with the shortlisted LUH's. These decisions delayed the modernsiations, but denying them out of party politics / support or personal interests is not solving anything.

Its not about which part is better, but its IS about which GOVERNMENT is better.

Modi govt. has be incredibly fast when it has come to clearing pending requests from the defence forces. Yet you continue to deny this reality and spread falsehood in an attempt at propaganda. EVERY decision of the Modi govt. was a principled POLICY driven decision. They way it should be. Not knee jerk or whimsical decisions.

Compare the 4 month of Modi govt. pro active steps for the defence forces and compare that to the 10 years of neglect of the armed forces by the previous CONgress govt. But instead of applauding this positive development you are desperately trying to find something negative in this just to satisfy your own political beliefs. You think people don't see that ?

Desperate housewives are always welcome to write to the PM. It does not make them any more right or wrong

You pathetic attempt to paint these policy driven decisions as based on "party politics / support or personal interests" is what is truly despicable. It reveals more about your character than the character of the govt.

What a shame that such Self Righteousness and anger was not present when CONgress govt. was in place.

‘Outdated Cheetah fleet still in use despite A.K. Antony’s assurance four years ago’
As India’s entire Sukhoi-30 fleet remains grounded and a committee inquires into the Cheetah helicopter crash that killed three young officers this month in Uttar Pradesh, wives of serving Army officials have joined hands to petition Prime Minister Narendra Modi against outdated defence equipment.

In a first, the ‘Indian Army Wives Agitation Group’ has sought the immediate replacement of unsafe military equipment.

“We think that precious life should not be wasted like this in accidents, just because better equipment could not be made available to them,” said Shuchi, wife of a serving Major. The spouses of 31 officers formed the ‘Indian Army Wives Agitation’ Group this month.

After giving details about the October 1 chopper crash at Bareilly, the petition urges the PM to “replace outdated and unsafe military equipment that endangers the lives of our soldiers.”

“We have faith in the Prime Minister who has given so much of encouragement to the Army. He also spent his Diwali with the soldiers in Siachen. We are sure that if things come to his notice, action will be taken. We need to bring it out and discuss it in the open,” Ms. Shuchi said.

The group also intends to give a representation to the Registrar of the Supreme Court on the problems in Cheetah and Chetak helicopters.

“Then Defence Minister A.K. Antony had said on the floor of the House a few years ago that the Cheetah fleet will be replaced soon. But more than four years later, the Army is still using it,” Ms. Meenal, another founder-member of the group, said.

‘In distress’
Throwing light on the plight of wives of serving officers, Ms. Meenal said: “We lead a highly stressful life. Every hour of the night and day, we are scared. We pray for the safety of our husbands and feel shattered by every news of a chopper crash. The officers who die in such accidents are people whom we have mingled with. They leave behind families of new-born babies and recently-wed spouses.”

The Army has so far issued several requests to the Defence Ministry for the replacement of the obsolete Cheetah and Chetak helicopters. Many Cheetah choppers have flown over 6,000 hours though they were built for 4,500 flying hours.
It was clear for past few years Indian Army is in serious trouble because off its equipment

That's a known fact. But slowly they are being replaced. If the Defence industry in India takes off it would be faster but modernisation of Indian Armed Forces is a reality.

How? IA and IAF chief asked him in their first meeting that the replacement of the aging LUH is important and must have priority.
IF he had cleared their request, he would have selected a winner and not delayed the selection!
IN Chief asked him about the shortage of SSKs and that a fast procurement must have priority.
IF he had cleared his request, he would have selected a winner and not delayed the selection!
M777 howitzers, Apaches, Chinooks all cleared by MoD and desperately needed by the forces, the PM easily could have cleared the procurements during his visit in the US, what stopped him?

You simply can't deny that, no matter how hard you try to make a party politics blame game out of it.[/quote]

Nope, a big part of the problem is IA itself! It has it's reasons why they lack so much behind IAF and IN in the modernisations and much of it has to do with corruption problems. This deal is no exception, where an IA officer that seems to have taken money to prefer an AW helicopter was or is under investigation. Same goes for Tatra trucks, howitzers, small arms..., so many deals in IA that are pending because of corruption problems, so they are blocking their own modernisation to an extend.

Coming from a defence background myself, lets just say that the army wives, in their glorified kitty parties, often dont understand their place. The wear an officer's ring, not his rank FFS.

Replacement will come, as and when feasible. But to me this represents nothing but the usual talking out of turn.

LOL. If it was SO DESPERATE why did your CONgress govt. not buy any of this ?

The way I see it, the Modi govt. is absolutely on the Right Track.

Give priority to "MADE IN INDIA" and "INDIAN OWNED" armaments and correct the wrong policies of the past congress govt. of 68 years.

Correcting the mistakes of 68 years of misgovernance will take a few more months. Deal with it (or don't). I am sure the armed forces are VERY HAPPY to deal with this real changes.

Modi. govt priority is INDIA not Indian Army. You must be confusing it with the priority of Pakistan govt. who's priority is pakistan army.

As for US visit, I am glad that US arms are being given a miss by the Modi govt. Show maturity unlike the politically immature Indian Army. Glad there is somebody at the top who recognizes the foolish patterns of some sections of the armed forces etched by the myopic past.

.
Damn, things must be really bad, if Army wives have to lobby.
All thanks to that idiot, the previous defence minister, Sir Anthony who couldn't move his blessed a$$ on procurement of defence equipment for years.
