(Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike killed at least 10 people suspected to be Taliban fighters in Pakistan's northern tribal areas on Sunday, intelligence sources said, days after another drone strike killed a top militant leader in the area.

Between 10 and 12 people were killed in the attack on three compounds in Babar Pehari, South Waziristan, six intelligence sources said. More militants were believed to be in the compounds when they were hit, officials said, meaning the death toll may rise.

The compounds were believed to house fighters belonging to the Punjabi Taliban, a group with close links to al-Qaeda, intelligence officials said.

The Pakistan Taliban has established sanctuaries in the mountainous Babar area, 140 km (87 miles) northeast of Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan, they added.

South Waziristan is controlled by the Pakistani army, which operates under an uneasy truce with militants from the local Wazir tribe.

Sunday's strike follows the death of Mullah Nazir, a Waziri militant leader, on Wednesday. Nazir supported attacks on American forces in Afghanistan but had signed two peace deals with the Pakistani army. On Sunday, thousands of his tribesmen protested against his killing.

Many Pakistanis say the drone strikes infringe the country's sovereignty, and are angry over civilian casualties they cause.

Others say the drones are the only way of killing militants who terrorize the local population in areas the Pakistani army is unwilling to patrol.

Drone strikes dramatically increased after U.S. President Barack Obama took office in 2009. There were only five drone strikes in 2007, but the number rose to 117 in 2010 before declining to 46 last year.

Exact casualty figures are difficult to verify. Most of those killed are militants, but some civilians have also been killed.

Now the death Toll is confirmed as 17, Drone attacks are keeping militants at bay.

Om America, Jai America.

The strategy is very clear, US is not ready to accept any peace agreement between Good Taliban and Pakistan, ( Although Mullah Nazir was a good taliban, At times he has shown his face, Repeated drone strikes on his area made him irritated, and he even threatened to cut the peace deal. Regarding Today's Drone attack, I don't know whether it occurred in Meshud area or area controlled by deceased taliban commander Mullah Nazir.

These were the "Bad" Taliban that got killed. The so called Pakistani Taliban.

Gen. Musharraf did not allow any illegal drone strike or any adventures in his time he was handling Pakistan & Pakistan problems well but when this bastard Zardari came into power with the help of US & corrupt people everything changed he went to US & signed many under table blind deals which allowed US to do whatever they want to do in Pakistan without a slap on their wrist.

What I believe is US are targeting good Taliban or good people who are with Pakistan & are against US & allied forces, so after the illegal strikes US uses their rented fake name of TTP to cover up their a$$e$ where as they are killing the good guys who are with Pakistan & fully support Pakistan. So indirectly we are on war with the US & allied forces.

Terrorists are no one friends, if you accept this simple fact may be you can save your country from daily bomb blasts ...

BTW if US can reach to these terrorists why not PA

One wonders what mr.IK will do to stop drone attacks if he comes to power. Will he shoot them down? Or attack US bases in Afghanistan ?

We live in a legitimate civil state so why are these rag tag tribals permitted to operate their own armed militias??? What is the guarantee the wont turn their guns against the state some time in future? all Taliban were appreciated as good some time in past! There is no differentiation among the terrorist, they are all bad.

US will stop drone attacks the day PA can reach them.
US can correct assessed the tribal mindset..unless they are not shown god like fury they cannot be tamed! Regrettable as the drone strikes may come, Government and PA has failed to secure these areas against harboring terrorists and has therefore given CIA every excuse to take action into their own hands!
