Dredger inducted into navy

BEIJING, June 17: Pakistan Navy has purchased a dredger from the China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSC) to enhance its dredging capabilities.

MV Behr Kusha was handed over to Pakistan Navy at a ceremony held at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao shipyard. Vice-Admiral Nayyar Iqbal especially came from Pakistan to attend the ceremony.

Pakistan’s Consul-General Zafaruddin Mahmood and the CSC vice-president were present on the occasion.—APP

just a regular dredger i guess. the river indus brings down a lot of silt and it effects the depth of port qasim, so i am assuming it will be used mainly for this purpose.

First dredging vessel inducted in to Pakistan Navy

KARACHI, Aug 15 (APP)- The first dredging vessel of Pakistan Navy Behr Kusha was formally inducted into Pakistan Navy in a ceremony held at PN Dockyard here on Friday. Chief of Staff Pakistan Navy, Vice Admiral Asaf Humayun, was the chief guest on the occasion, said an ISPR (Navy) press release.

It said that the vessel has been acquired from China. It is 81 meters long with a draught of 4.95 meter and displacement of 5037 tons.

It would primarily be utilized to clean out approaches, harbour channels, basins and naval berths at Jinnah Naval Base Ormara.

This platform would also be used for dredging naval areas at Karachi and other national ports.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice Admiral Asaf Humayun said that China is a trusted and tested ally of Pakistan and acquisition of Dredger is a distinct demonstration of sound and long lasting historic relations between the two countries.

It also signifies our desire to further cement the existing military cooperation with China, he added.

Commenting on the fast growing maritime sector in the country, the chief guest said that besides construction of the deep-sea port at Gawadr and Coastal Highway, many other mega projects related to the ship construction and ports refurbishment are in the offing.

Earlier, in his welcome address Vice Admiral M.A. Khan highlighted salient features and significance of the vessel and said that the dredger, material, machinery and equipment meet the requirements of Chinese National Standard and China Ship Inspection Bureau.

The ceremony was attended by a large number of senior naval officers, foreign delegates and civil dignitaries.

I am familiar with the civilian dredgers. Main function of the dredger is to dig the sea bed in the main navigation channel and the along the pier.
This allows docking of deep draft vesels in the harbour.
