Indian Army set to be provided a fillip with the ATAGS, said to be among the best in its class.

The Advance Towed Artillery Guns System (ATAGS), a light-weight long-range automated gun being developed by DRDO with private participation, will be ready for production by 2019 after undergoing six years of development and testing. The ATAGS, which was sanctioned in 2012, has about 6,000 different components.

"The 155MM/52 calibre is going to be one of the best artillery guns in the world in its category," said Anil Datar, noted scientist and Director General (Armament and Combat Engineering Cluster).

Extolling the virtues of ATAGS further, Datar said it will take over guns in this category in the future. "Its long range, light-weight and automation features will help it immensely. Loading ammunition will be fully automatic, and it will be compatible with various kinds of ammo as well. Private players like Tata, Larsen and Tubro, Bharat Forge have all been roped in to complete the project," Datar said.

The DRDO scientist further added that the ATAGS concept design is ready. "It will weigh 12 tonnes — two tonnes lighter than other guns of its category. It will also be capable of shooting off five successive rounds in short duration. Total development will take three years and testing will last for another three. It's different from Bofors in kind and calibre, and I can say it will be the best of its kind once inducted into our force."

K N Rajan, Director, Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), said making of this gun is under mission mode, meaning it's made as per the specific requirements of the Indian Army, which was going through a post-Bofors lull regarding artillery guns. "The Army tried to acquire it from the international market but couldn't, due to delays and unfair means of getting contracts, due to which the ministry of defence approved the ATAGS project," he said.

Rajan further added that DRDO scientists have been sent to Cranfield University in the UK to get more information on the principles of gun designing.

After the Pinaka mark-1 multi-barrel rocket launcher, the DRDO is now developing Pinaka mark-2, which will be developed by August 2015. Pinaka mark-2 has the same dimensions as its predecessor, but its range will up to 60 km, as compared to Mark-1's 39 km. Another project of DRDO which is presently in technology development mode is the anti-tank guided missiles, which will have inertial navigation system and GPS for precision attack.

Some one should make them shut up,seriously what's wrong with these mofos.make these grand announcements when you have completed the whole thing

.
DRDO goes to private companies, they go to local talents, who take inspiration from various sources and the give to company, they hand over the layout and design to DRDO. It puts its seal and says DRDO had designed it and then publishes in media the plans. When they start thinking of production the reality shows up...that its just a paper design, to make reality we dont have technology. And then project langers for ages.

Open up arm manufacturing to private companies, there are many young talents they can make this industry.
Currently its very hard to get all the papers in right place to get some kind of license to build technology related to arms and ammunition. Thats why we see only handful large companies participating in all the projects, without even having the zeal to do something. They just want projects, rest is all jugaad.

. .
The only good thing I got from this is private participation. Let us see the outcome of private participation. I hope it is with companies that had JV with foreign companies.

They showed the design and new ammunition for it in def expo 2013.

This ATAGS looks really impressive on paper but they are again being a bit over ambitious with this project.Look at the projected weight - just 12 tons where as the MKEK Panter or the ST Kinetics FH 2000 weighs ~18 tons.
Then they are aiming for a range of 60 km,which can be achievable though since OFB already produces ERFB base bleed rounds with a range of ~40 km from L/45 guns and ARDE is in the process of developing an equivalent to the VLAP rounds.

All in all,I just hope th is project doesn't get delayed by too far since Indian Army is desperately lacking modern 155mm artillery pieces.A delay of a year or a year and a half is tolerable but definitely not more than that. But looking at the track record of ARDE,I'm quite optimistic that they will pull it off again.
