: DRDO develops flame-retardant clothing
MUMBAI: An organisation of the Ministry of Defence, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed flame-retardant clothing made of Nomex to offer greater safety level with minimum compromise on comfort to aircrew and paratroopers.
Nomex is non-combustible in air and does not melt when exposed to the flame as it is an inherently flame retardant meta-aramid fiber. The technology gives more time to escape from flash fires.
DRDO has developed flame retardant Nomex overalls for Tejas (LCA) aircrew. Besides, the fabric for the overall, the garnitures, viz., zippers, Velcro and sewing thread, used in the fabrication of the overalls are also flame retardant. The overall is a one -piece garment with good wear comfort and aesthetic look.
The organisation has also developed dual material gloves made of leather on palmar side and knitted Nomex fabric on the dorsal side as the leather on the palmar side provides better grip while the Nomex fabric provides good fire-retardant properties.
Further, the gloves have an extended gauntlet of about four inch from the base of the palm for enhanced protection.
DRDO has also developed a flame retardant, thermal-insulated jump suit for CFF paratroopers. The twin-layered jump suit comprises an outer made of Nomex material and a thermal-insulated inner made of thinsulate material sandwiched between two layers of cotton fabric for use at an altitude of 30,000 feet.
The design features of the jump suit include double zipper running from collar to ankle for easy don and doff, knitted cuffs and collars, elastic waist band for better fitment, etc. It comes in four sizes. The users have accepted the jump suit after extensive successful trials.
The organisation believes that in modem warfare, the fighter pilot has to be well equipped with the technologically advanced clothing and supportive equipment to face the enemy in a better way and survive even in adverse conditions; whereas the clothing worn by the pilot apart from countering aviation stresses, has to provide protection to the wearer in the event of an air crash so that the heat transferred through the clothing do not lead to excessive burn injury.
