DRDO conducts trials of Akashdeep aerostat - SP's Aviation

November 22, 2012: The DRDO has successfully tested its Akashdeep medium sized aerostat system, indigenously designed and built by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, at the IIT Kanpur airstrip. The indigenously developed components on the high endurance surveillance system–the IAF requires more than 20–includes high performance PU Coated Nylon fabrics, Aerostat Balloon, Electro-Optical Tether, Electro-Hydraulic Control System, Smart-Active Pressure Control System, Helium Gas Management System and other systems.

According to the DRDO, "The prime objective of trials at IIT, Kanpur, to demonstrate endurance of the system constantly for five days at an altitude of one km without Helium top-up. The other objectives were improvising of integration methodologies to reduce integration time, testing of the new balloon, inflation using improved and modified Aerostat inflation safety net assembly and validation of dynamic stability data through instrumentation." The IAF currently operates IAI/ELTA aerostatus for surveillance, but has expressed interest in the Indian programme as well.

congrats DRDO .

There is also a grave disadvantage. Enemies can shoot it down .
It can be used only for domestic purposes. For ur adversaries we need Rustom mk 2 and UCAV.

They will be kept for marine surveillance and Moaist infected areas, they can also operate at higher altitudes within our borders.

Will be used for high altitude areas and Maoist areas i think :D

U mad Bro?

Aerostats are useful to detect low flying objects, like cruise missiles. All of them will be deployed in the western border. 8-10 such Aerostats will be enough to to keep constant vigil on our western border for potential intrusions.

Aerostats are very good for peacetime surveillance .

Good work by DRDO.

The platform which Akashdeep is kept can also be used for ground surveillance and coastal defense.

They dont come down very fast, even if you shoot it. You get helium leaks. But, you can bring it down safely and patch it up. The problem with using this for marine surveillance is turbulence. Deploying this along the coast leads to problems during strong wind conditions.
